Aggie men dominate Causeway rivalry on senior day

DAVIS, Calif. — Hosting the 14th Annual Causeway Classic dual meet against Sacramento State, UC Davis split the results, with the men posting a dominant victory over the visiting Hornets. In all, the Aggies posted multiple personal record marks, and improved all-time standings. The Aggies combined to win 16 events en route to splitting the Causeway Cup points between the men's and women's teams.

Senior Michael Pertusati hit a PR in both the hammer and the discus to highlight his last outing at Woody Wilson Track. Pertusati's discus PR of 51.46m (168-10) vaults him to ninth all-time in the UC Davis outdoor record books as his second all-time event.

Senior Day was not all about the seniors, however, as several underclassmen recorded PR's and all-time marks. Sophomore Kathleen Bufka hit a PR in the long jump in her second consecutive meet, improving upon her previous jump by a centimeter. Freshman Samantha Louie PR'ed in both the long jump and the triple jump to be the top Aggie finisher in the triple. Most notably, freshman Sadye Peschke improved upon her eighth all-time finish in the 400m hurdles, as she crossed in a career-best 1:01.36, and freshman Marlene Gutierrez now sits tied for ninth all-time in the women's hammer after a two-meter PR of 52.58m (172-06).

With nearly every senior in competition on Friday, UC Davis featured its versatility, as senior Erika Contreras debuted in the women's shot put to earn points towards the women's team scores. The women's 4x100m relay team ranks second in the Big West after the Causeway Classic with a season-best 45.36, while the 4x400m relay cut five seconds to sit fourth in the conference. The Aggie men posted outstanding finishes across the board, sweeping the both the 110m and 400m hurdles, high jump, and the 5,000m, and recording a majority of the top finishers in a handful of additional events to lead to a 115-75 point victory. The Sacramento State women proved to be tough competition, as Shilah Bedingfield set new school records in all three of her events (4x100m relay, 200m, 400m) to lead the Hornets to a 114-83 point win. With today's split finish, the Causeway Cup standings remain the same, as UC Davis and Sacramento State each earned five points. UC Davis leads the race with 62.50 points to the Hornets' 22.50.

The multis will head south to UC Santa Barbara next weekend for the Big West Multi Championships, featuring a handful of Aggies in the decathlon and the heptathlon, aiming to kick-start UC Davis' Big West Championship title run.
