HAYWARD, Calif. — With half the team competing at day two of the Mike Fanelli Track Classic, several Aggies earned personal best marks, looking for a spot in the NCAA West Prelims.
In the field portion of the day, senior Cody Holt set a new PR in the men's hammer, throwing a distance of 54.14m/177-07 to take second overall. Holt's prior PR of 54.07m/177-05 was set at the 2018 Causeway Dual.
Senior pole vaulter Stasia Kubicki won her second straight meet, clearing 3.80m (12-05.50) on her first attempt to take the title. Although she did not clear the next height, the bar was moved to 3.95m (12-22.50), slightly above her PR mark of 3.92m (12-10.25), set at the Big West Championships in 2017. Tying for second place, Katrina Meier cleared 3.62m (11-11.75) for a new personal best mark, bettering her previous height of 3.55m (11-07.75) set last time out at the Hornet Invite. Rounding out the vaulting trio, Marin Chamberlin also PR'ed, with a seventh place finish of 3.50m (11-05.75), determined by attempts.
Competing in the women's high jump, Jaleah Calvillo finished second overall, clearing 1.63m (5-04.25). The next bar height following Calvillo's final clearance was set at 1.68m (5-06.00), which would have been a new personal best mark had she cleared it.
Transitioning into the track events, Sydney Holmes led the Aggies in the 100m hurdles, running 15.42 for tenth place overall, missing her PR by just three-hundredths of a second, while Kathleen Bufka recorded a new wind-legal personal best time in the 100m dash, finishing 12th overall with a 12.70 run. Her all-time collegiate personal best is 12.68 (+2.2 wind) from the Aggie Open previously in the season.
To close day two in Hayward, the dual-team cross country and track runners tore up the track, recording four PR's, and several marks that hit the Big West Conference qualifying standards from 2018.
In the women's 1500, Anaya Ward PR'ed for the second consecutive week, crossing 16th overall in 4:34.64, followed by a PR run from Mandy Wainfan (33rd, 4:39.00). Making her track debut, Eva Goodisson hit a Big West mark, finishing in 4:40.78.
Sarah Anderson had the biggest PR on the day, placing 12th in a fast-paced 5000m run, finishing in 16:36.19 to crush her previous PR of 17:12.19. Anderon's mark is now the seventh-fastest all-time at UC Davis, joining the ranks behind the likes of Alycia Cridebring (15:49.05), Sarah Sumpter (16:09.83), Kim Conley (16:17.51), Kaitlin Gregg (16:21.99), Christine Hoffman (16:30.85), and Patti Gray (16:34.87). The 16:36.19 run is the first to break into the top-ten record book since Hoffman's mark in 2014. Also running in the 5K, freshman Marie Navarro improved upon her previous mark, earning a PR of 17:36.17.
Aggie track & field fans will get their fill on Saturday, as UC Davis competes at four different meets in both Northern and Southern California. The Mike Fanelli wraps up for the Ags with the long jump in the morning, while Xolan Brown is projected to compete in the third heat of the 800m dash at the prestigious Stanford Invitational. In Southern California, a sprint squad will hit the track, along with a handful of throwers, multis, hurdlers, Drew Xandrine-Anderson in both the triple and long jump, and Jered Española in the pole vault. Live results can be found for each meet in a previous release here.
