BERKELEY, Calif. — The UC Davis track & field team opened its outdoor season at the Cal Opener, winning twelve events, and placing four new names into the outdoor record book.
The men saw solid performances from several Aggies, showcasing nine personal best marks, mostly by the distance squad. Nearly every UC Davis runner in the men's 3000m finished under nine minutes, led by senior Jordy Ceja with a huge personal best of 8:28.43, a mere tenth of a second behind the first place finisher. Wade Kiesow, Bradley Needles, and Fenn Hoppe raced in the 3000m at UC Davis for the first time, and each recorded new lifetime bests. Adam Fragola cut over 30 seconds off his high school best in the 800m in his mid-distance debut as an Aggie.
Jered Española cleared a 4.85m pole vault for a new collegiate personal best, while Anthony Easter finished the 110m hurdles in 14.51 for a PR by a tenth of a second, landing tied for seventh all-time with senior Kyle Clancy. Senior Dante Berggren shaved nearly a second off his previous 400m best from Modesto College. In his college debut, Matthew Okonkwo won both the 200m and the 400m, although neither time was his lifetime best. Okonkwo now sits at No. 6 in the record book for the 400m.
On the women's side, senior thrower Erika Contreras left her mark in the outdoor record book, throwing 51.00m in the hammer for a new personal best, and tenth all-time at UC Davis. Contreras is the first new mark to crack the top-ten in the event since 2017. Also competing in discus, Contreras recorded a new PR by nearly four meters. Marlene Gutierrez was the lone Aggie in the shot put, and improved upon her best shot in the indoor season for a PR finish of 12.75m.
Coming up huge in the women's 3000m was freshman Anya Sturm, who cut twenty seconds off her altitude-corrected indoor best time, crossing second overall in 10:07.33.
Also transitioning from her indoor season was fellow freshman Kirsten Carter, who continues to leave her name in the record books. Carter finished second in the 100m dash by just three hundredths of a second, and sits No. 8 all-time in the outdoor records.
The Aggies return to the track next Friday and Saturday as they host the Aggie Open at the Woody Wilson Track. The hammer and javelin will be held at the Hammer Ring on Friday afternoon, with the rest of the events to compete on Saturday. Also in action next week will be senior Erinn Beattie, who will travel to Birmingham, Ala. to compete as UC Davis' first Division I qualifier at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Beattie will participate in the pentathlon on Friday, and the high jump on Saturday.
