DAVIS, Calif. — UC Davis outdoor track hosted its first of three home meets on Friday and Saturday, joined by competitors from Sacramento State, San Jose State, Pacific, and Santa Clara, along with local junior colleges and various club teams. In very rainy and windy conditions, the Aggies recorded over a dozen new personal best marks to finish in first place as a team with 238 points for the women, and 236 points for the men.
On Friday, the Aggie Open started with the hammer and javelin throws; freshman Marlene Gutierrez PRed in hammer with a throw of 46.18m, joined by sophomore teammate Xochitl Bryson, who PRed with 43.01m.
Continuing with the field events on Saturday morning, senior thrower Greg Richardson PRed in the shot put to win the event and lead the Big West Conference with a 16.23m heave. Senior teammate Michael Pertusati finished second in the event, and sits behind Richardson in Big West standings. Senior multi Drake Foote competed in just the shot and discus, and PRed in both, finishing in the top-ten.
In the women's pole vault, junior Bianca Becker and senior Stasia Kubicki each finished with the winning height of 3.75m, but Becker took top honors due to attempts, while newcomers Katrina Meier and Marin Chamberlin vaulted 3.45m, and finished fifth and sixth, respectively, also based on attempts. Sophomore Kathleen Bufka PRed in her two events, winning the long jump with a distance of 5.48m, and placing sixth in the 100m with a wind-assisted time of 12.68.
All six of the women's 100m sprinters finished in the top-eight, led by senior Kieana Butler, running a 12.08, closely followed by junior Kierra Davis at 12.10. Davis went on to win the 200m in 25.25 with a 2.3 head wind.
The men's sprint squad was led by senior Brandon Jetter, who PRed with a 10.68 in the 100m to take home the event title and sits third in the Big West. Jetter also finished third in the 200m at 22.84, hindered by a 2.6 m/s head wind, and was also the third leg of the winning 4x100m relay team that ran 42.13. Freshman Max Glasser competed in the 100m and 200m as well, and placed third and first, respectively, with a 10.73 PR in the 100m. Fellow freshman Matthew Okonkwo PRed in the 100m, running a 10.71 to place fifth in the conference, followed by Glasser.
The dual sport cross country athletes put on a show in the women's 1500m, with freshman Anaya Ward taking the crown, and the Aggies placing all seven runners in the top-eight. Ward ran a 4:40.34 to PR, and sit seventh in the Big West, and be the highest-ranked freshman in the conference. To close the Aggie Open, junior defending women's 10,000m Big West champion Sarah Anderson won the 3000m in 9:52.03 to be the only runner to cross under 10 minutes; the second-place finisher was nearly 30 seconds behind, finishing at 10:18.18. In the men's 3000m, junior Zachary Katzman cut even more time off last weekend' PR for a new personal best of 8:55.94 to be the only Aggie under the nine minute mark, finishing third.
UC Davis will be back in action next week, as they split the team between the Hornet Invite at Sacramento State and the USC Trojan Invite at USC on Mar. 15-16.
