ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Freshmen Rei Nakatani and Christine Danielsson each won their matches on Tuesday morning but fifth-seeded Penn State was able to win the remaining three contests to slip by the eighth-seeded UC Davis women's golf team, 3-2, for fifth place at the East & West Match Play Challenge at the University of Michigan.
UC Davis earned its way into the match by beating the host Wolverines on Monday, 3-2. On Tuesday, Nakatani beat Ashni Dhruva, 3&2, while Danielsson edged the Nittany Lions' Madeline Herr, 1-up. Jackie Rogowicz beat UC Davis freshman, Yoonhee Kim, 3&1, sophomore Samantha Hutchison fell to Cara Basso, 2&1, and senior Paige Lee dropped a 5&4 matchup to Penn State's Lauren Waller.
This year marks the third consecutive year that the Aggies have played in the tournament, which debuted in 2014 using a combination of stroke play and match play in order to prepare teams for a revamped national championship that used a similar format for the first time the following spring.
Kim tied for 17th during the 36-hole stroke play portion of the event on Sunday while Lee, Hutchison and Kim won their matches against Michigan on Monday.
UC Davis will continue the fall portion of its 2016-17 season next week when it travels to Vail, Colo., for the Golfweek Challenge.
