LONG BEACH, Calif. - Erika Barr won the 3,000-meter steeplechase for the second straight year as the UC Davis women roared into first place at the Big West Track and Field Championships, while titles from Trevor Halsted in the 10,000 and Kyle Clancy in the high jump lifted the men into second after the first day of action at Long Beach State on Friday.
The Aggie women, who have won three of the past four Big West titles, have 62.5 points through seven events with UC Santa Barbara in second with 40. Hawai'i (35), LBSU (35) and UC Riverside (33) round out the top five.
Cal Poly has 65 in the men's race, just ahead of UC Davis (57) and the host 49ers (55). CSUN is in fourth with 34 and UCSB is fifth with 33.
Plenty of points will be up for grabs on Saturday with 14 events for both the men and women on the docket. Besides four field event finals, the Aggie women have six qualifiers for track finals while the men have five.
UC Davis entered the championship with 50 all-time individual Big West titles and added three more on Friday with Barr, Halsted and Clancy.
Barr, who owned the best steeplechase time in the conference this season, remained the league's fastest with her first-place time of 10:42.54. She led a 1-2 Aggie finish in the race with 2013 champion Katie Fry close behind (10:46.42) in second. Barr is the first Big West runner to win consecutive steeplechase titles since Bethany Nickless of UCSB in 2006-07.
Halsted, a senior from Davis, earned his first Big West title and is the Aggies' first winner in the 10k since Calvin Thigpen in 2011. Halsted crossed in 30:07.51, the fourth-fastest winning time since the Big West started contesting the race in 1976. Amar Dholakia (30:41) brought home fourth-place points.
Clancy, a freshman from Davis, had a busy and productive day for the Aggies by scoring 16, points which when combined with last week's decathlon, give him 18 points so far. He scored 10 of them in the high jump, which he entered as the No. 1 ranked athlete in the Big West. Clancy's the Aggies' first-ever Big West champion.
Clancy cleared 6 feet, 11.5 inches on his first attempt after going over the bar at 6-9.5 on his first try as well. He passed at 7-0.50 and tried to tie the school record of 7-2.5 but was unable to do so. Clancy led a strong showing in the event with Jiusti finishing second at 6-9.5, Shane Ryan (6-7.5) taking fifth and Max Cawley (6-3.5) tying for seventh. UC Davis scored 23 of the event's 39 possible points.
Clancy added six points by finishing third in the long jump with a wind-aided mark of 23-9 while Basil Okoroike (6th) and Tommy Grossman (7th) also scored. Jordon Rushing got the day going for the Aggies with his fourth-place in the steeplechase.
The UC Davis women, who began the way with eight points from last week's heptathlon, scored 54 points on Friday in just four events. Olivia Goins took eighth in the steeplechase to team with Barr and Fry for 19 points in the event.
The Aggies picked up 17 points in the 10,000, thanks to a second-place finish from Christine Hoffmann, a fourth-place showing by Katherine Gallaher and a fifth-place from Nicole Lane. Hoffman was the 2014 champion in the 10k.
Double-digit points also came from the pole vault contingent which had defending champion Ariel Maroon tie her career-best mark of 12-10 while picking up six points for third place. Holly Tokar, who took first as a freshman in 2014, tied for fourth after going over the bar at 12-10 as well.
The Aggies' remaining eight points on Friday came from senior Catherine Li, who was second in the long jump. Li, the school-record holder in the triple jump, went 19-9.75 which would've bumped her to No. 3 all-time at UC Davis except it was wind-aided at 2.1/ms, just over the allowable 2.0/ms.
Freshman Mikaela Adolphus qualified in both the 200 and 400 on Saturday, after finishing fourth and second, respectively, in Friday's prelims. Rochelle Nadreau (8th) also qualified in the 400.
Rianna Goins was the top-ranked 800 runner in the Big West coming into Friday and kept that position after posting the fastest prelim time (2:10.76). Emily Antonino (2:12.43) also moved on after taking fifth. Emma Redick (1:01.05) was fifth in the 400 hurdles to also earn a spot in Saturday's final for the second straight year. She was fourth a year ago.
For the men, Brian Thomas advanced in the 400 after finishing fourth in the prelims while Cody Nguyen was fourth in the 800 to also move on. Clancy will stay busy after qualifying third in the 110 high hurdles.
Finals in the pole vault, javelin, triple jump and discus are scheduled for the men on Saturday while the women will have finals in the hammer throw, high jump, shot put and triple jump. Finals in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays will join other track finals.
Saturday's field events start at 10 a.m. while events on the track start at 2:08 p.m. Fox Sports Prime Ticket will televise the meet live from 2-5:30 p.m.
