BERKELEY, Calif.
- The UC Davis women won seven events on their way to a win over Big West rival Long Beach State and host Cal, while the men won three events in their battle, as both Aggie teams opened the 2016 season well at the rainy and windy Cal Opener on Saturday.

The UC Davis women scored 177.5 points to outdistance the 49ers, who were second with 162.5. The Bears scored 161 for third place while Nevada finished fourth with 83. Freshman Mikaela Adolphus (400), Rianna Goins (800), Emma Redick (400 hurdles), Catherine Li (long jump), Holly Tokar (pole vault) and Breanna Standifer (shot put) each captured wins for the Aggies. UC Davis also won the 4x100 relay.

The men's team scored 96 points and were third in its competition which was won by Cal with 144 points. Jason Chandler won the 400 hurdles, Marc Toney finished first in the pole vault and the Aggies were victorious in the meet-concluding 4x400 over Long Beach State, which captured last year's Big West title in the event.

"I was very proud to see how the whole team came together under adverse conditions," said head coach Rahn Sheffield. "I was especially proud of Rianna Goin's come-from-behind finish in the 800 meters and the tenacity of our men's team."

The women opened the running portion of Saturday's meet in strong fashion, posting a clear win in the 4x100 in 46.88 with Cal (47.15) taking second. Erika Barr (4:37.80) then led a dominant Aggie showing in the 1,500, finishing in second place with Christine Hoffman taking third and UC Davis owning seven of the top 10 places.

Adolphus, in her first collegiate meet, then brought home the team's first individual victory with her first-place finish in the 400 in 56.17. Two events later, Goins provided excitement by winning the 800 in 2:11.50. Redick's first-place finish in the 400 hurdles in 1:01.55 then gave UC Davis its second straight victory.

Tokar, Li and Standifer scored nine points each with their victories in the field. Tokar, returning to the pole vault after redshirting last year, won with a mark of 11 feet, 11.75 inches while freshman Anastasia Kubicki was third. Li, the 2014 Big West triple jump champion, won the long jump with a wind-aided mark of 18-5.25 and Standifer took first in the shot put at 43-10.5.

Despite the tough weather conditions, Morgan Dutra had a career-best mark while taking eighth in the hammer throw, moving up two spots to fifth on the program's all-time chart at 159-04. Michaela Mundt was second in that event at 178-7.

Chandler posted the first of the two Aggie men's wins on the track after winning the 400 hurdles in 53.79, and then returned at the end of the meet to run on the winning 4x400 relay which was also comprised of Brian Thomas, Aspyn Walton and Antony Ardis. UC Davis was timed in 3:20.30, clearly in front of Cal (3:22.68) and Long Beach State (3:27.30).

While UC Davis only won two events on the track, the Aggies challenged throughout the day. Walton was second in the 200 and third in the 400 (49.00) while Thomas took third in the 100 and Kyle Clancy was third in the 110 high hurdles.

Toney earned the Aggies' victory in the field, clearing 15-5 in the pole vault for his first win of the season. TK Dodds was second in the triple jump (45-2.5) and Gregory Richardson (shot put) and Matthew Bender (discus) each picked up fourths for other highlights.

UC Davis will return for its first home meet of the season when it hosts the Aggie Open next Saturday.
