SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Russell Pfaff's win led a 1-2-3 finish for UC Davis in the two-mile run at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival on Friday while Samantha Kearney was a winner in the steeplechase, helping highlight the Aggies' track and field day in the Bay Area.
UC Davis also sent several competitors to the Stanford Invitational where Krista Drechsler, racing late in the evening, had a big PR in the 10,000. Her time of 34:53.66 also jumped her to No. 5 on the Aggies' all-time list.
Jonathan Sees finished third in his section of the 1,500 in 3:48.25, best on the team this season to help lead the UC Davis men at Stanford while Calvin Thigpen posted a top-10 time in the 10,000 (30:28.90).
At San Francisco State, Pfaff finished first in the rarely run two-mile with a time of 9:39.06, edging freshman teammate Grayson Hough who was just behind in 9:39.87. Gregor Lloyd-Smith took third in 9:40.60.
Kearney had a huge personal-best in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with her victory. She crossed in 10:44.81, providing her a nearly nine-second win in the 22-competitor field and surpassing her previous-best time of 11:01.19. Kearney solidified her No. 4 spot on the program's career leaders list.
UC Davis' men and women competed in the 1,500, steeplechase and two-mile at San Francisco State with Caitlin Fitzgerald also highlighting efforts with her third-place in the 1,500 in 4:38.79. She was also fourth in the two-mile in 11:00.34, just ahead of teammate Kristine Lozoya (11:13.86) who was sixth.
Sees, who earlier this season broke a 40-year-old school record in the 3,000, was in a close heat of the 1,500 at Stanford with just eight seconds separating the 14 runners in the field. Sees battled with eventual winner Trevor Dunbar (3:46.52) of Portland and runner-up Steve Sodaro (3:47.69) of Cal before crossing third less than two seconds behind.
Freshman Nathan Strum also had a top-three finish in his section of the 1,500, timed in 3:51.64. Brock Bennett was fourth in the collegiate javelin, posting a mark of 194 feet, 5 inches, just off his personal-best of 195-11, and Ross Neely also earned a fourth, going 22-3.25 in the collegiate long jump.
Thigpen, running a 10K that didn't start until nearly 11 p.m., finished his section of the race in 30:28.90, debuting him at No. 9 on the Aggies' career leaders list. He's the first UC Davis runner to move into the top 10 since Patrick Parsel in 2006.
Drechsler's time of 34:53.66 in the 10K eclipsed her previous-best of 36:02.44 which had her seventh all-time before Friday. She's just the fifth Aggie to go under 35 minutes in the event.
Alycia Cridebring and Kristina also helped highlight the Aggie women's performances at Stanford, finishing third and fourth, respectively, in their 1,500 section in 4:37.62 and 4:37.91.
The Aggies also picked up a highlight from assistant coach Kim Conley who won her section of the 1,500 in 4:19.14. She won the race over Mary Alenbratt of SMU by four seconds.
UC Davis will continue action at Stanford on Saturday while a majority of the team opens competition at the Cal-Nevada Championships in Claremont.
