Aggie men dominate Cal Opener

BERKELEY, Calif. — In the first meet of the outdoor season, the Aggies picked up several new personal best marks at the Cal Opener, including a pair of all-time marks. The men dominated the meet, claiming individual wins in nine of the twelve events participated in.

On the women's side, the Aggies won the pole vault, with Bianca Becker and Marin Chamberlin sharing the top clearance of 3.85m (12-07.50) to sit tenth all-time in the outdoor list. Katrina Meier also recorded a PR of 3.70m (12-01.25) to tie for third in the event.

Both UC Davis long jumpers leaped a PR distance, with Kathleen Bufka picking up second place honors with 5.68m (18-07.75), while Samantha Louie jumped 5.17m (16-10.75). Sydney Holmes followed indoor PRs with an event win in the triple jump, jumping the second-furthest distance of her career at 11.83m (38-09.75).

Flora Oliveira won the 400m hurdles, crossing in 1:02.35, her best opener so far in her career, while Chelsea Daye recorded a PR in the 200m to win the event in 24.74.

Three different throwers took home the field titles on the men's side, with Kevin Ward winning hammer, Jarrett Rasmussen wining shot put, and Corey Moore taking discus. Freshman Cole White took second in both hammer and shot put.

Freshman Donovan Jones won the high jump with a 1.96m (6-05.00) clearance, followed by Clem DeGiovanni at 1.86m (6-01.25).

On the track, Aggies swept the top-four places of the men's 400m; senior Dante Berggren crossed in 49.20, with Matthew Okonkwo (49.75), Anthony Easter (49.75), and Sebastian Criego (50.29) hot on his heels.

UC Davis had ten runners in the men's 3000m, with four placing in the top-10. Ryman Crone won the sprint at the end to surpass teammate Adam Fragola, sweeping the No. 1 and 2 places. Crone cut 30 seconds off his previous 3000m from two years ago, while Fragola made his debut in the event.

Will Sornberger opened his Aggie career with a 54.60 in the 400m hurdles for the event title, while Fabio Kammler and Brandon Jetter went 1-2 in the 200m with sub-22 times.

The Aggies will be in action at home next weekend, hosting the Aggie Open, with a high school meet on Friday evening. The collegiate meet will begin with the hammer throw and the javelin on Friday, with the rest of the meet continuing on Saturday. A full schedule can be found online here.
