Aggies fall at UC Irvine, await Big West seeding

Box Score

IRVINE, Calif. — Closing out the regular season, UC Davis men's tennis fell at UC Irvine, 4-0, on Saturday. The Aggies conclude their season with an 11-10 overall record, and 1-4 Big West record heading into the Big West Championships on Thursday.

With rare losses on courts one and two, the Aggies dropped the doubles point for an early 0-1 disadvantage.

In singles play, the match did not go in favor of the Aggies from the start, as the Anteaters won first sets on four out of the six courts. UC Irvine claimed quick wins on courts five and three, putting the overall score at 0-3, but the Aggies were fighting back. David Goulak and Chethan Swanson were the only two to win their first set, and Ivan Thamma and Arjith Jayaraman were battling for control over the second set.

Ultimately, UC Irvine gained the momentum at No. 6 singles, delivering Jayaraman's first loss of the season at the position. Goulak was leading a set but down 1-4 in the second, Thamma was close to forcing a third set, as he was at 5-4 in the second, and Swanson was poised to claim the first Aggie point when his score was halted at 7-5, 5-2 at the clinch.

The Aggies fall to 1-4 in the Big West with the loss, and join UC Riverside in the standings with an identical record. UC Santa Barbara has clinched at least a share of the regular season title, as well as the tournament's No. 1 seed, with its 4-0 victory over Cal Poly on Saturday. Although UCSB still needs to play Hawaii on Sunday, it is one of just two teams to earn four wins in the conference, and will win the tiebreaker with Cal Poly as they won the matchup between the two teams, bumping the Mustangs to second place with their 4-1 record. UC Irvine has locked in the No. 3 seed, as it finished 3-2 in conference play, while Hawaii has control over its destiny. With a win over the favored Gauchos, the 'Bows would seal the No. 4 seed, while a loss will lead to a three-way tie with the Aggies and the Highlanders at 1-4.

The Aggies will head to Indian Wells, Calif. for the Big West Championship, hosted at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Thursday for a 9 AM quarterfinal matchup. With league standings, UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly have secured the top-two seeds, and will receive a bye in the tournament's first round.
