DAVIS, Calif. – Senior psychology major
Emily Allen and junior global disease biology major
Wallis Lapsley are UC Davis' Big West Scholar-Athletes of the Year, as announced by conference officials on Wednesday. The pair are keynote student-athlete speakers for next Thursday's (March 14) Scholar-Athlete Banquet, which will take place at the Wyndham Hotel in Garden Grove, Calif.
An outside hitter from Santa Barbara, Calif., Allen captured first-team All-Big West Conference distinction in her final season. She ranked fourth in the league in kills per set (3.58), while leading the Aggies in sets played (106), kills (379), total hitting attempts (1,125), and points scored (423.5).
Allen enjoyed 15 "double-double" matches with at least 10 kills and 10 digs, helping her become just the fourth player in school history to break the 1,000 barrier in both categories.
In the classroom, Allen holds a 3.59 grade-point average, having garnered Big West Academic All-Conference for three straight years. Her academic abilities also landed her a position as a research assistant in UC Davis' Mind-Emotion Development Lab under the tutelage of Dr. Kristin Lagattuta.
Allen plans to pursue a graduate degree in organizational psychology or organizational development after she graduates from UC Davis.
Lapsley continued a tradition of academic and athletic success for men's soccer, becoming the 12th Aggie named to the Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII first team while also earning All-Big West Conference honorable mention honors in 2018.
The Seattle native started all 20 matches in net for UC Davis, posted a 0.73 goals against average, 82 saves and earned eight shutouts en route to an 11-4-5 overall record and an appearance in the Big West Tournament championship match. He ended the season ranked No. 8 in the country in save percentage (.845), No. 13 in saves, No. 16 in the nation in clean sheets, No. 19 in goalie minutes (1,859), and No. 22 in goals against average.
Among his conference brethren, Lapsley allowed the second-fewest goals (15) and posted the league's lowest goals against average, while also pacing the Big West in saves— a Division I-era single-season record and third-highest total on the all-time list — and tied for the top spot in shutouts.
Lapsley also set school Division I season marks for save percentage, saves per game (4.10), goals against average, while tying for the top spot in shutouts.
He is also a laboratory technician at the world-renowned UC Davis School of Veterinary medicine, with two publications pending. After pursuing a career in professional soccer, he plans to become a registered nurse with the ultimate goal of working in underserved communities.
Also unveiled on Wednesday was UC Davis' list of Big West Commissioner's Honor Roll recipients. In all, 141 Aggies earned academic accolades from the league; 57 earned Highest Honors, 50 were named to the Honors list and another 34 received Commissioner's Honors.
