Box Score 1 DAVIS, Calif. — The Aggies recorded their fourth consecutive win by defeating Sacramento State 6-1, but the second match of the doubleheader against Holy Names was suspended due to darkness. UC Davis' record moves to 4-0, to officially record the best start in the Aggies' Division 1 history, and since records started in 1996.
In the Causeway Cup rival match against the Hornets, the Aggies dropped No. 2 doubles, but came back to take the overall point for the third straight match with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles by identical 6-4 scores. With the wins, duo Ivan Thamma and David Goulak are now 10-2 on the year, and 2-1 in the No. 1 position in the doubles lineup together. Clinching the doubles point for the third time in as many attempts is the pairing of Alex Scemanenco and Daniel Landa, who are 3-0 in dual matches so far, and 4-1 overall.
In singles play, there were a lot of familiar faces, as the Aggies and the Hornets competed against each other throughout the fall tournament season, but the only repeating match occurred on court No. 2, where Goulak nearly replicated the same score with Sacramento State's Dom Miller to be the first off with a 6-2, 6-3 victory. Following Goulak was Arjith Jayaraman at No. 6, improving to 3-0 at that spot in the lineup this season, with each win coming in straight sets.
The Hornets kept their Causeway hopes alive with a win on court No. 4, and the remaining three matches about to go to three sets.
Proving why he was the Big West Athlete of the Week, Chethan Swanson clinched the match for UC Davis with his 6-0, 4-6, 7-5 win, after being down 2-5 in the third set against Johannes Gjerdaker. Swanson is now 4-0 on the season at the No. 4 and No. 5 positions, and is tied with Landa for most singles wins this season (11).
Finishing after the overall match had been decided was Thamma, who won his match in a deciding third set tiebreak, and Nil Giraldez, who dropped the opening set en route to a three-set win for a perfect 3-0 record as an Aggie so far.
Today's win over Sacramento State added five points to the Causeway Cup standings, extending UC Davis' lead to 25 points, and putting the Aggies just eight points away from the title.
In the second match of the day, UC Davis had reached a 3-1 lead over the Holy Names Hawks when the match was canceled due to darkness. It will not count towards individual or team statistics, nor will it be rescheduled, as the Aggies are already slated to travel to Holy Names on Feb. 22 for another doubleheader matchup, this time on the road.
The third dual of the day between Holy Names and Sacramento State was also canceled due to darkness.
The Aggies continue a seven match homestand next Saturday, Jan. 26, against Nevada at 10 AM and Sonoma State at 2 PM. The men's tennis team will compete in a doubleheader alongside the women's tennis team, as they take on San Francisco in their home opener on Jan. 26 at 11 AM.
