DAVIS, Calif. — After a late start Friday afternoon, the Aggies kept the momentum from last weekend, cruising to a 6-1 win over Eastern Washington.
For the first time this season, the match started with doubles play, where the Aggies jumped out to quick 4-1 leads on courts No. 2 and No. 3. Sophomores Dariush Jalali and Chethan Swanson were the first off the court, winning six straight games en route to a 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot. Newcomers Alex Scemanenco and Daniel Landa move to 2-0 so far this spring with their 6-3 win at No. 3, clinching the doubles point for a 1-0 team lead.
UC Davis did not look back, and continued to roll through the singles, with sophomore Arjith Jayaraman quickly dispatching his opponent 6-1, 6-0 to be the first singles match on the board for the Aggies. In both of Jayaraman's wins at No. 6 this season, he has been the first finisher for a 2-0 record in that position. Following Jayaraman was freshman Nil Giraldez, who posted his second straight win at No. 3, along with junior David Goulak, who clinched the overall match with his 6-4, 7-5 victory.
Although he finished after the clinch, Scemanenco earned his first singles win of the dual season, defeating Eastern Washington's Jeremy Mueller, 7-6, 6-3.
In the third consecutive dual, Thamma and Swanson were the last two singles matches on court. Swanson recorded the sixth point for the Aggies with a 7-6, 7-5 win, while Thamma took the second set to force his third consecutive three set match, but was unable to hold out.
UC Davis men's tennis will have a quick turnaround, playing a doubleheader Saturday against Sacramento State at 9 AM, and Holy Names at 12 PM.
