BERKELEY, Calif. - Kyle Clancy won the men's high jump, Forrest Hierholzer took first in the men's pole vault and Ariel Maroon and Holly Tokar went to a jump-off in the women's pole vault before tying for second, as UC Davis performed well at the Brutus Hamilton Challenge at Cal on Saturday afternoon.
The meet was the invitational portion of the Brutus Hamilton meet which held its open program on Friday. The Aggies had limited competitors on Saturday but still managed to score 95.5 points to place third on the women's side and 64 points to finish fifth on the men's. Host Cal won both the men's and women's meets.
The jumps crew led the way for the Aggies, particularly on the men's side where Clancy and Hierholzer picked up wins. Clancy, a freshman from Davis who went 7 feet, 0.25 inches in the high jump at the Mondo Team Challenge earlier this season, tied Noel Frazier of Cal at 6-11.75 but won based on few misses. Jianni Giusti, who won the high jump event on Friday at the Brutus Hamilton Open, equaled his winning jump on Saturday by jumping 6-8.
Hierholzer posted a career-best mark of 16-4 in the pole vault, tying Steven Pust for first but winning by fewer misses. Hierholzer, whose previous best was 16-0.75, was good his first try at 16-4 while Pust missed once before clearing the height. Both were unable to go over the bar at 16-8.
Maroon and Tokar brought UC Davis excitement in the women's pole vault. They tied with Danielle Brandon of Sacramento State at 12-5.5 and all were good at 12-7.5 in the jump off but Brandon finished first after later clearing 12-9.5.
The Aggie women also had some strong showings in the running events, particularly in the 100- and 200-meter dashes where a trio of top-10 marks were achieved. Natsumi McGee tied her own career-best mark in the 100, finishing fourth in 12.04 seconds, which currently ranks her tied for eighth all-time at UC Davis.
Mikaela Adolphus and McGee picked up their other two in the 200. Adolphus lowered her career-best from 24.41 to 24.30 with her second-place finish on Saturday while also jumping her two spots to No. 4 on the program's all-time list. McGee made her debut at No. 6 after taking third in 24.48.
Rochelle Nadreau nearly tied her career-best mark of 55.88 in the 400, crossing in 55.91. Morgan Dutra was third in the discus, Catherine Li took fourth in the triple jump and Erinn Beattie finished fifth in the high jump. UC Davis was also second in the 4x100 in 46.41.
Matthew Bender helped lead the men in the field events with his fourth-place showing in the discus at 164-5. Basil Okoroike was fourth in the triple jump at 47-6.25.
The Aggies will return to action on Friday when they head to rival Sacramento State for the Causeway Dual at Hornet Stadium.
