SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The UC Davis men's track and field team, led by two wins each from freshmen Kyle Clancy and Cameron Edwards among their nine overall, took first place at the Mondo Team Challenge at Sacramento State on Saturday while freshman Erinn Beattie tied the Aggies' high jump record for the third-place women.
The Aggie men competed in a triangular meet against both Sacramento State and Portland State, scoring 121 points to win top honors. The Hornets were second with 104 while the Vikings tallied 44 to finish third.
Clancy won the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.62 seconds and then cleared an impressive 7 feet, 0.25 inches in the high jump to win that as well. Both marks are in the program's all-time top 10. Edwards was victorious in the 100 in a wind-aided time of 10.74 seconds while also winning the long jump with a mark of 23-8.25.
Other winners for the Aggie men included Aspyn Walton in the 200 (21.64), Brian Thomas in the 400 (47.29), Miguel Aceves in the 1,500 (3:59.00), Basil Okoroike in the triple jump (49-10) and Matthew Bender in the discus (167-11).
The UC Davis women finished third in its quadrangular meet, scoring 109 points. The host Hornets (159) took first and were followed by UNLV (151). Portland State picked up 96 points to take fourth.
Beattie provided the big highlight for the Aggies, going over the high jump bar at 5-9.25 to tie the school record set by Katie Barber at Cal last year. She cleared the bar on her second attempt after making the first three heights on her first attempts at each.
Morgan Dutra picked up the lone event win for UC Davis after finishing first in the discus throw at 152-5. She challenged her season- and career-best mark of 159-4 which she achieved at Cal in March. Her winning throw on Saturday came on her fourth attempt.
Natsumi McGee was third in the 200 in 24.59, moving into 10th place all-time at UC Davis. Ariel Maroon and Holly Tokar cleared 12-7.5 in the pole vault for second and third, respectively, with Maroon getting second because of fewer misses. Michaela Mundt was second in the hammer throw (170-9) after competing at Stanford on Friday.
Clancy's win in the high hurdles debuts him at No. 8 on the program's all-time list for that event and is the first change to that chart in two years. His win in the high jump provided a major highlight in the field events, tying him with Jah Bennett for No. 2 all-time. Bennett earned his mark in 2007. Clancy is also just the third Aggie in school history to go over seven feet.
Edwards went a fast 10.74 to take the 100 and then jumped 23-8.25 on his third attempt in the long jump, missing a spot on the top-10 list by only half an inch. Walton and Thomas gave UC Davis a clean sweep of the sprints with their wins. Walton, facing a headwind of 2.3 meters/second, won the 200 in 21.64, just .01 off his career-best from earlier this season.
Thomas entered the day No. 5 on the all-time 400 list at 47.52 seconds but jumped two spots to No. 3 after lowering his PR to 47.29. Aceves edged Ricardo Avila of Sac State by just over a half-second to win the 1,500 while Bender marked at 167-11 in the discus to slip by the Hornets' James Kinlock (166-6). Okoroike won the triple jump at 49-10, making his debut on that all-time list at No. 8.
UC Davis finished up at the Stanford Invitational on Saturday as well with Cody Nguyen taking eighth (1:50.50) among 47 competitors in the 800 and Rianna Goins (2:09.62) just missing her PR (2:08.45) in her 800 race.
The Aggies travel to Arizona for the Sun Angel Classic at Arizona State on Friday and Saturday while also competing nearby at the Mesa Classic.
