Lambdin wins twice to lead Aggies at UCLA

April 4, 2015

LOS ANGELES -- After opening the UCLA Legends Invitational with a pair of wins on Friday, UC Davis continued its success in Southern California on Saturday, as senior Raquel Lambdin won two events and the Aggies brought home five titles overall at Drake Stadium on the campus of UCLA to cap off a busy day for the men's and women's track and field teams.

Lambdin opened with a win in the 1,500 in a season-best time of 4:25.43, more than a second faster than her previous season best (4:26.69) set at the Texas Relays on March 28, and just two-tenths ahead of teammate Erika Barr in second place. She continued her winning ways later in the day in the 800, crossing in another season-best time of 2:09.99 -- topping her previous best of 2:11.19 set at the Cal Opener on March 7.

Barr, who won the steeplechase in her event debut on Friday, turned in the ninth-fastest time in school history in the 1,500 on Saturday, crossing in 4:25.63. Clara MacLeod made it three Aggies in the top five, finishing fourth in the event with a time of 4:38.55.

Senior sprinter Ashley Marshall added to the Aggies' award haul, winning the 100 in a time of 11.53 -- her third win in the event this season after crossing first at both the Cal Opener and the Aggie Open back in March. Katie Barber rounded out the titles on the women's side, tying for first in the high jump with a height of 1.75m (5-08.75).

On the men's side, junior Jason Chandler took home the title in the 400 hurdles, crossing the line in a time of 52.51 -- his second-fastest time of the season behind his season-best 52.38 set at the Bobcat Invitational on March 27.

Junior Nicholas Ratto led a group of four Aggies in the top 15 in the 1,500, finishing second with a time of 3:46.72 -- the fastest by an Aggie this season, improving upon his time at the Cal Opener (3:47.75) by nearly a full second, and moving up to fifth on the school's all-time list in the event.

Another pair of Aggies also turned in season-best performances as senior Marcus Johnson finished sixth in the 100 with a season-best time of 11.06, shading Corey Hobbs' time of 11.08 at the Bobcat Invitational earlier this year, while sophomore Antony Ardis, who posted a top-10 finish in the 100 earlier in the day, set a season-best in the 200, crossing in a time of 21.99 to top Hobbs' time of 22.12 at the Cal Opener and finish third.

Sophomore Alex Grigoriev finished second in the 800 to lead a trio of UC Davis runners in the top five, crossing in a time of 1:53.77. Ratto was third with a time of 1:54.90, while Cody Nguyen was fifth in a time of 1:55.70. Freshman T.K. Dodds led the jumpers, finishing third in the triple jump with a distance of 13.78m (45-02.50), while Brandon Greenberg (16.53m, 54-02.75) and Chase Dariso (6.40m, 21-00.00) finished fourth and fifth in the shot put and long jump, respectively.

Meanwhile, at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival, Matt Monroe set a personal season best in the 200 with a time of 22.35, besting his time of 22.72 at the Hornet Invite, and finished seventh overall in the 400 with another season-best time of 49.74.

In the throws, freshman Frankie Kerstetter and sophomore Hawk Hammer finished on the podium in the discus and javelin, respectively. Kerstetter finished with a throw of 42.44m (139.03) to finish third, while Hammer finished with a throw of 53.10 (174-02) in the javelin to also finish third.

To round out the day, sophomore Marc Toney finished tied for first in the pole vault with a height of 4.85m (15-11.00), then won a jump-off with Fresno State's Louie Pancotti when the Bulldog missed on all four of his heights. Toney's height was the second-highest of the season for an Aggie, trailing only Forrest Hierholzer's 4.90m (16-00.75) at the Cal Opener.

Sophomore Morgan Dutra was third in the discus with a throw of 46.28m (151-10) -- the seventh-best throw in school history.
