DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis women captured eight events and the Aggie men won four as both track and field teams showcased their talents to the home crowd during the Aggie Open at Woody Wilson Track on Saturday.

The home meet was the first of three scheduled this season and welcomed hundreds of open and collegiate competitors from the local region. UC Davis, which was coming off a hard-fought Cal Opener at Berkeley last weekend, used the meet as an opportunity for many athletes to compete in off-events to help build versatility throughout the lineup.

UC Davis responded with outstanding performances. For the women, first-place finishes went to Ashley Marshall in the 100 (11.83), Rianna Goins in the 800 (2:12.36), Hannah Kirkegaard in the 5,000, Emma Redick in the 400 hurdles (1:01.14), Erika Barr in the 2,000-meter steeplechase (6:42.58), Catherine Li in the triple jump (40-00.50), Veronica Smart in the shot put (45 feet, 7.25 inches) and Breanna Standifer in the discus (151-00).

For the men, the Aggies had three wins on the track and one more in the field. Alex Grigoriev captured the 800 (1:50.41), Trevor Ehlenbach finished first in the 1,500 (3:52.69) and Trevor Halsted took the 5,000 (14:29.75). Brandon Greenberg brought another win home in the field events, taking the shot put (54-6.5)

"I really thought the teams did very well," said head coach Rahn Sheffield. "We put them in different events to make the team as whole stronger. We are moving in a (good) direction."

Redick's win in the long hurdles produced her second top-10 time in as many weeks. She went 1:01.20 at Cal last weekend before winning Saturday's race in 1:01.14 which put her up to No. 4 all-time at UC Davis. Kirkegaard's victory in the 5K came in 16:51.37, debuting her at No. 10 on that ledger.

The Aggie women had a particularly solid showing in the discus where Standifer's mark of 151-0 jumped her two spots to No. 6 all-time and Morgan Dutra's second-place performance of 144-8 put her at No. 10. Ariel Moon tied for second in the pole vault (12-1.50), getting her into the top 10 in 10th.

Catherine Li's mark in the triple jump marked the second time in her career that she went past the 40-foot distance. Her other time came at last year's Big West Championship and gave her the school record (41-1.5).

Former Aggie Karl Moran, running unattached, won the 400 hurdles (52.72), edging Jason Chandler (52.87). Sheffield was especially pleased with the fourth-place finish of Jelani Legohn who he said was right with Moran - last year's Big West champion in the event - through eight hurdles.

"That takes a lot of guts and courage in race management to stay with (Moran)," Sheffield said.

Halsted produced an outstanding time in the 5K, crossing in 14:29.74 which was nearly 20 seconds in front of the rest of the field. Sheffield said it's Halsted's approach which excites him.

"When you have the mentality of 'if you want to beat me then you're going to have to come get me,' I love that type of personality because somewhere down the line you're going to make it all the way and you're going to break people along the way," he said.

UC Davis will break for final exams in the coming week. The Aggies are scheduled to travel to the UNLV Invitational next week.
