DAVIS, Calif. - Senior Chid Onyewuenyi broke two of her own school records while distance runner Jonathan Sees finished the men's 3,000-meter run with a time of eight minutes, 13.92 seconds to break Ed Haver's 1971 school record, highlighting UC Davis action at the Aggie Open collegiate track and field meet at the Woody Wilson Track Saturday afternoon.
Onyewuenyi fired a second-place hammer throw of 59.86m, or 193 feet, five inches. She later won the shot put with a mark of 14.89m (48-10.25) on her third of four attempts. Her hammer throw disttance on Saturday was 10 centimeters better than her old record of 58.76, set one week ago at the Cal Opener. Onyewuenyi's shot mark surpassed her 2009 standard by almost a foot.
Sees finished almost seven full seconds ahead of runner-up Isaac Chavez of Chico State, who crossed in 8:20.44. Sees' time is almost two full seconds better than Haver's old mark of 8:15.84, converted from a two-mile race. Onyewuenyi's
Other Aggie men's highlights include freshman Nathan Strum, who won the men's 800 with a time of 1:51.98, moving him into 10th in school history. Thomas Phillips, one of only two Aggies in program history to surpass the 51-second mark in the 400 hurdles, tied his own personal record of 51.96 to win that event. Brock Bennett also hit a PR with a first-place effort of 59.73m (195-11) in the javelin. Long jumper Ray Green entered the Aggie top 10 with a winning mark of 7.30m (23-11.5), headlining a 1-3-4 UC Davis finish.
Among the UC Davis women, junior Kayla Carter edged Nevada's April Pate with a winning 14.12 in the 100 hurdles, the second-fastest time in school history. NCAA qualifier Sirena Williams holds the Aggie mark in that event with a 13.43 at the 2010 Big West Conference Championships.
The Aggies placed three among the top four finishers in the women's 200. Sophomore Melanise Chapman was the overall winner with a 24.55, moving her behind Ugo Eke for second on the all-time UC Davis outdoor list. Eke, for her part, finished second at 24.79 while freshman Kellie Grigg was fourth with a 25.15. Grigg moves into the Aggie top 10 for the 200. All three times were slightly wind-hindered, with Chapman and Eke running into a 1.0 mps headwind.
Both UC Davis pole vault squads enjoyed strong meets. Senior Ethan Ostrom became only the third Aggie in history to clear 17 feet, winning the meet with a 5.20m (17-0.75) leap. He passed every height until 4.90m then cleared the bar on his third and final attempt. Ostrom beat 5.05m on the first try, then took three attempts at 5.20m for his lifetime best. Sophomore Emily Bush also hit a PR in the women's competition, clearing 3.55m (11-7.75) to edge teammate Lauren Radke on attempts. Bush now ranks sixth in UC Davis history in that event.
UC Davis returns to action at the Hornet Invitational on March 19.
