DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis men's and women's track and field teams combined to win 15 events while setting nearly 30 season-bests as the Aggies closed out the home portion of their schedule with strong performances on Saturday at the Woody Wilson Classic, held during Picnic Day activities on campus.
Freshman sprinter Melanise Chapman captured wins in both the 100 and 200 while Sirena Williams - one of 17 Aggie seniors honored during the meet - set a meet record in the 100-meter hurdles with her winning time of 13.60 seconds. It was also just off her school record of 13.50. Matt Roberts had a big PR in the javelin for the men, winning with a mark of 191-feet, 2 inches while senior Ben Johnson ran his first 800 in two years, finishing second in 1:54.26 while posting the fastest time on the team this season.
The UC Davis women set 17 season-bests during the meet and tied two others while the men had a dozen season-bests and tied one more. Men's coach Jon Vochatzer said the home crowd brought out the best in the Aggie teams.
"Whenever you have a meet at home it's always a great meet," he said. "Especially this meet. It's so important because Picnic Day means so much to the kids,. It means a lot because of the tradition and it means so much to our alumni. It's really one of those things you love doing and the athletes always rise to the occasion. Overall it was a great day."
Like Johnson did for the men, Lauren Wallace had an impressive race in her 800, winning in a career-best time of 2:11.00, putting her eighth on the all-time list at UC Davis. Kristin Arkin led a 1-2 Aggie finish in the 1,500, edging teammate Abigail Gallaher at the line in 4:38.39. Gallaher was timed in 4:38.88. Krista Drechsler captured the Jill Peckler 5,000 Invitational in 17:15.26 with Caitlin Fitzgerald and Katie Nast giving UC Davis a sweep of the top three spots.
UC Davis also won the 4x100 relay in season-best 46.91 for its remaining victory on the track. Senior Stephanie Eckels picked up one of two first-place finishes in field events for the Aggies, winning the triple jump at 39-5.25 while Lauren Radke captured the pole vault at 11-11.75. Freshman Emily Bush made her debut on the program's top-10 list for the event, clearing 11-5.75 to move into a tie for sixth.
Led by Carrington Mahr's second-place high jump of 5-6, four Aggies had season-highs in that event on Saturday.
Other performances that impacted the career lists came from Hannah Royall in the hammer, whose mark of 153-8 improved her No. 10 position, and freshman Kayla Carter who is tied for ninth after finishing seventh in the 100 hurdles (14.74).
The Aggie men added a half-dozen event wins during the meet, four of them on the track. Kyle Suarez had one of them, taking the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:16.22. UC Davis also had a good day in the hurdles, grabbing wins from senior Polly Gnepa in his season-best time of 13.90 in the 100 hurdles, and from Nolan Frazier who finished first in the 400 hurdles in 54.01. Jazz Trice (14.30) was third in the short hurdles while Jeffery Campbell and Thomas Phillips were third and fifth, respectively, in the long.
Phillips brought home the remaining victory in a running event, winning the 400 in 47.96. Roberts had a big day in the javelin with his winning mark of 191-2, nearly 20 feet further than his previous-best this year. Igor Seriba had the other field-event win for UC Davis, going 48-8.25 in the triple jump, his second first-place finish this season.
Aggie seniors were in their last home meet and women's coach Deanne Vochatzer said it was an important moment for them.
"Between the men and women we had 17 seniors and a few of them wanted to leave their mark," she said. "To have the alums back watching them as well as parents and family, it's special."
The Aggies' talented senior class is comprised of Chelsea Azevedo, Kaitlin Gregg, Anikia Jackson, Renah Howel, Alison Stoakley, Tessa Fraser, Jenna Gailey, Brittany Bickel, Ben DeLand, Scott Himmelberger, Gnepa, Johnson, Roberts, Suarez, Trice, Eckels, and Williams.
UC Davis will return to competition next weekend when it competes at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational at Cal.
