SEATTLE, Wash. – The UC Davis track team opened its indoor season in record-breaking fashion this weekend at the UW Invitational, held at the Dempsey Indoor on the campus of the University of Washington.
Junior
Marlene Gutierrez highlighted the season-opener by shattering the indoor school record in the shot put with a mark of 49-2.50 (15.00m). Gutierrez broke the nearly eight-year-old record on her fifth throw of the competition to finish third overall.
On the first evening in Seattle, the Lindsay, Calif., native uncorked a personal best of 54-6.5 (16.62m) in the weight throw to place fourth overall. That mark that came on her second throw is the fifth-best in UC Davis indoor history.
The Aggies went 1-2 in the triple jump as sophomore Kerrington Smith won the event with a leap of 39-1.75 (11.93m) and senior
Samantha Louie followed with a mark of 38-5 (11.71m). For Smith, the personal best ranks fifth all-time in the UC Davis indoor annals.
In the sprints, junior Deja Ingram clocked the seventh fastest 60m indoor time in Aggies history with a 7.73, to place fifth overall. She also finished with a 25.94 in the 200m.
Newcomer Brianna Weidler crossed the line in the mile with a time of 4:55.82 to post the seventh fastest time in school history.
UC Davis will continue its indoor slate with a split-squad. The Aggies will head back to Seattle for the Husky Classic and also send a contingent to Albuquerque for the Don Kirby Elite Invitational. Both meets will be held on Feb. 11-12.
