GLENCOE, Ill. — Sophomore
Mark Stephens closed out the Windon Memorial Classic with the Aggies' low round of the day, finishing with a 2-under 69, while sophomore
Jacob Westberg finished in a team-best tie for 38th, leading the UC Davis men's golf team at the 2021 Windon Memorial Classic on Tuesday.
After some teams wrapped up second-round play that was halted on Monday night due to darkness, the Aggies finished with their best round of the tournament during Tuesday's final round, shooting a combined 286 en route to a 13-over-par 865. The field found themselves chasing tournament champion Kansas, which took home team honors with an 18-under 834, winning by seven strokes over host Northwestern.
Stephens' 69 was his second-lowest round of the year and his second in the 60s behind only his career-low 65 in the second round of the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational. After finishing 2-over on the back nine, Stephens recovered to post a superb front side, carding birdies on the first, third, sixth, and seventh holes, en route to his final score and a tie for 47th at 5-over for the tournament.
He was joined in that spot on the final leaderboard by teammates
Lucas Carper and
Thomas Hutchison, who shot a 2-over 73 and an even-par 71, respectively.
Westberg, meanwhile, followed up his opening-round 69 — which was tied for a season low — with back-to-back rounds of 73, eventually finishing with a 2-over 215. Sophomore
Alejandro Nava rounded out the UC Davis group, finishing in a tie for 74th with a 10-over 223.
The Aggies close out the fall portion of their schedule on Oct. 11-12 in Reno, Nev., participating at the Wolf Pack Classic hosted by Nevada at the Hidden Valley Country Club.
