Hutchison fires school-record 62 as Aggies extend lead

Senior breaks mark set by Austin Graham in 2008 and tied by Tyler Raber in 2010

USAFA, Colo. — UC Davis senior Thomas Hutchison fired a school-record round of 62 on Saturday to finish 10-under for the day and hold a five shot lead after 36 holes as the UC Davis men's golf team took control of the competition following day two of the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational hosted by the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Following his opening-round 68 on Friday, Hutchison did not let up in his second round, finishing with 10 birdies in his bogey-free round to end day two at 14-under and stand five shots better than CSUN's Blake Brothers. Hutchison's round broke the previous school mark set by Austin Graham, who shot a 9-under 63 in the second round of the 2008 The Prestige, and matched by current assistant coach Tyler Raber, who shot an 8-under 63 in the second round of the Stockton Sports Commission Pacific Invitational in 2010.

Hutchison has shot in the 60s in each of his last four rounds, standing just one shy of the school record of five consecutive rounds in the 60s set by Luke Vivolo in 2015-16. A 69 or better on Sunday, and Hutchison will have an opportunity to either match or break Raber's school tournament mark for 54 holes set in 2009 when he shot a 14-under 199 at that year's Stockton Sports Commission Pacific Invitational.

Hutchison's career collegiate tournament best is an 11-under 205 back in 2018 when he won the Windon Memorial.

The team's round of 272 on Saturday is tied for the sixth-lowest team round in school history and the lowest since the Aggies shot a 270 in the second round of the Alister MacKenzie Invitational at the Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif., in 2018. UC Davis finished at 16-under for the day and now stands at 25-under for the tournament, leading second-place San Jose State by 15 shots heading into Sunday's final round.

Sophomore Mark Stephens jumped up nine spots on the leaderboard into a tie for fifth place on Saturday, following up his even-par Friday round with a collegiate career-low 65 on Saturday. He finished with nine birdies on the day — five of those on the front nine where he shot a 31 — and enters the final round at 7-under.

Stephens' score also puts him among the top 10 single rounds in school history, tying him for eighth on the list with 14 other standout rounds.

Sophomore Jacob Westberg finished with a 73 on Saturday, but still holds on to a spot in the top 10, currently tied for 10th at 2-under for the tournament. Following a rough start on the back nine, Westberg birdied four of the first six holes on the front, finishing 3-under in his final nine holes.

Sophomore Alejandro Nava finished at even-par for the day and currently stands tied for 28th at 1-over for the tournament following the first 36 holes, ending his day with three birdies on the front nine, while sophomore Lucas Carper is in a tie for 38th at 3-over for the event.

Over on the Eisenhower Silver Course, junior Shane Muldowney shot a second-round 76 and is in a tie for 15th at 4-over in the individual event, while freshman Chad Cliff is tied for 23rd at 7-over following a 78 on Saturday.

Sunday's final round begins at 6:15 a.m. PT on Sunday for the Aggies. Live scoring is available online at GolfStat.com.
