DAVIS DOCKET: This Week in UC Davis Athletics (Aug. 30-Sept. 5)

Busy week sees nine teams in action, including the debuts of cross country, football, men's water polo, and men's golf

DAVIS, Calif. — A quick look around UC Davis athletics for the week of Aug. 30-Sept. 5. Information is subject to change and links to follow along with the various events will be linked here as well as the sports' respective schedule pages at UCDavisAggies.com when available.

MEN'S & WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Sept. 1: UC DAVIS AT NEVADA TWILIGHT CLASSIC (RENO, NEV. - SIERRA SAGE GOLF COURSE), 5 p.m. PT
**UPDATE: This event has been canceled due to projections of wind and smoke from the nearby fires.**

NEWS & NOTABLES: Having not competed since the 2019 NCAA West Regionals, the UC Davis men's and women's cross country squads are back on the course for a mid-week run in Reno, competing at the Nevada Twilight Classic hosted by the University of Nevada. The Aggie women are coming off a second-place finish at the 2019 Big West Conference Championships and an eighth-place finish at regionals, while the men are looking to build off a fifth-place ending at conference and 19th at the regionals two years ago. The women return their top four scorers from the Big West meet in junior Eva Goodison (4th), sophomore Chloe Arriaga (8th), sophomore Emma Hicken (11th), and sophomore Sierra Atkins (13th). The men, meanwhile, bring back their top three runners from conference in senior Ryman Crone (8th), sophomore Ivan Mendez (18th), and junior Adam Fragola (22nd).

NEWS & NOTABLES: Battling a pair of Pacific Northwest powers during opening weekend, the UC Davis men's soccer team stays local this week, welcoming another Washington school to Northern California in Gonzaga on Thursday (Sept. 2) for the team's home opener, before heading to the Bay Area on Sunday (Sept. 5) to take on San Jose State. Seniors Grant Fidler and Andy Velasquez (from Max Glasser) each found the back of the net against No. 9 Washington and SeattleU, respectively as the Aggies dropped a 2-1 double-overtime decision to the Huskies and 3-1 decision to the Redhawks two days later. UC Davis is 3-0-1 in its last four home openers and will meet Gonzaga for the first time since 2018, having won the last two meetings with the Bulldogs. The series with the Spartans is knotted at 4-4-1, but the Aggies have won their last two clashes with SJSU, including a 3-1 win in San Jose in 2019.

NEWS & NOTABLES: UC Davis opens its season against an FBS opponent for the 10th time in its Division I era, taking on American Athletic Conference member Tulsa, which celebrates its quasquicentennial season (125th) of football this fall... The Golden Hurricane went 6-3 overall and 6-0 in the AAC in 2020... They fell by a 27-24 final to No. 6 Cincinnati in the conference championship then dropping a 28-26 thriller to Mississippi State in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl... UC Davis had its season postponed to the spring, finishing with a 3-2 mark and final national rankings of No. 14 (Stats Perform) and No. 16 (AFCA). UC Davis enters the 2021 season with early buzz, landing a No. 23 in the Stats Perform media poll and a No. 21 nod from the coaches' association, returning 12 of its 13 All-Big Sky Conference honorees, while punter Daniel Whelan, DT Bryce Rodgers, and C Connor Pettek made the Preseason All-Big Sky team as announced during the league's media event in July.

NEWS & NOTABLES: A split of its home-opening weekend has the UC Davis women's soccer team standing at 2-2 overall on the year as the Aggies head to the "Gem State" for a pair of matches at Boise State (Sept. 2) and Idaho State (Sept. 5). Following a 2-0 defeat at the hands of New Mexico State in a "Battle of the Aggies," UC Davis got a pair of goals from freshman Emma Vane and another from senior Emma Hasco to out-gun visiting UTEP for a 3-2 win. Vane punched in her first career goal just three minutes into the contest and added the game-winner in the 81st minute, while Hasco's score came at the 38-minute mark that staked the Aggies to a 2-0 lead at the time. UC Davis is 1-1 all time against Boise State, but the two programs haven't met since a 2-1 Aggie victory in 2006. UC Davis is 2-0 all time against Idaho State, last posting a 2-1 win in 2008.

NEWS & NOTABLES: After running a season-opening gauntlet featuring a rivalry clash and a pair of nationally ranked opponents, the UC Davis women's volleyball team stays home to host its own two-day tournament this weekend, welcoming Nevada, Santa Clara, and San Francisco, for the 2021 Aggie Invitational. UC Davis opened the year 0-3, falling to Sacramento State, No. 6 Florida, and No. 17 UCLA — including going toe-to-toe with the Bruins in the home opener. Freshman Amara Aimufua averaged 3.18 kills per set and totalled 35 kills overall to lead the team offensively, Shira Lahav scooped 48 digs and averaged 4.36 digs per set, and junior Josephine Ough swatted 22 blocks at the net — including a career-high 11 against the Hornets in the season opener.

NEWS & NOTABLES: The UC Davis field hockey team hosts its second straight home contest at the Aggie Field Hockey Facility before hitting the road for three straight, welcoming Dartmouth to Northern California on Friday (Sept. 3) afternoon. The Aggies are coming off a season-opening defeat at the hands of No. 10-ranked Liberty as senior Brooke Sanchez netted her side's lone score against the Flames.

NEWS & NOTABLES: Picked to finish atop the Western Water Polo Association standings entering the 2021 campaign, the UC Davis men's water polo team jumps into the pool for the first time this year, heading to the East Coast to take part in the Navy Open hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy. The Aggies are scheduled to take on Johns Hopkins and Mount St. Mary's on Saturday (Sept. 4) in the first day of play, followed by contests against Bucknell and the host Midshipmen. UC Davis, which won the 2019 conference title and NCAA Tournament berth with a 14-5 victory over UC San Diego before opting out of the 2020 campaign, picked up five first-place votes and 60 total points according to the WWPA coaches. Leading scorer Nir Gross returns to lead the offense after netting 58 goals and tallying 61 points two years ago.
 

MEN'S GOLF
SEPT. 5-7: UC DAVIS AT MARQUETTE INTERCOLLEGIATE AT ERIN HILLS (ERIN, WISC. — ERIN HILLS GOLF COURSE)
NEWS & NOTABLES: Fresh off a second-place finish at the 2021 Big West Conference Championships, the UC Davis men's golf team jumps right back into the swing of things beginning Sunday, teeing off in their first event of the fall schedule at the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills in Wisconsin. The Aggies return every member of their 2020-21 roster, including last year's Big West individual champion and NCAA Regional qualifier Lucas Carper, Big West Tri-Freshman of the Year Jacob Westberg, and senior Thomas Hutchison, who became the first UC Davis player to advance to the round of 16 at the 121st U.S. Amateur at Oakmont Country Club this past summer.
