Aggies tee it up at Big West Championships

UC Davis heads to Yorba Linda, Calif., in search of its seventh league title

DAVIS, Calif. — The UC Davis women's golf team heads to Southern California this week in search of its seventh conference crown, joining the league's eight other members for the 2021 Big West Conference Championships at the Yorba Linda Country Club in Yorba Linda, Calif. Play begins at 7:30 a.m. on each day of the three-day event, beginning Monday (April 19) and running through Wednesday (April 21).

HOW THEY LINE UP…
Sophomore Jackie Lucena, seniors Madison Wood, Skyler Wood, and Hannah Sun, and junior Andrea Gomez Lloret make up the Aggies' lineup for the Big West Championships.

AGGIES AT THE BIG WEST CHAMPIONSHIPS…
UC Davis has won the Big West title six times since joining the league, all coming from 2010-2015… The six conference titles rank second all time among league members, trailing only the 10 won by former member San Jose State from 1987-96… Six Aggie individuals have also taken home medalist honors: Chelsea Stelzmiller (2010 - won in a playoff), Alice Kim (2011), Bev Vatananugulkit (2012), Demi Runas (2013), Andrea Wong (2015), and Paige Lee (2016)… Stelzmiller also tied for first in 2008, but lost in a playoff to UC Irvine's Kim Lorenzana… UC Davis finished third in its last appearance in the Big West Championships in 2019, finishing 15 shots back of reigning champion Long Beach State, which has won back-to-back titles… The Aggies also have runner-up team finishes in 2008, 2009, and 2018… Only Madison Wood (t8th in 2019 and t12th in 2018) and Hannah Sun (t21st in 2019 and t8th in 2018) have Big West Championship experience on the 2021 roster.

AGGIE STORYLINES…
• UC Davis enters the Big West Championships after finishing sixth at the Fresno State Classic on April 12-13.
• Sophomore Jackie Lucena led all Aggie individuals, finishing in a tie for 12th with a 2-over 218, while senior Madison Wood was also in the top 25, finishing in a tie for 23rd with a 6-over 222.
• Four of Lucena's last six rounds have been played at par-or-better, including a second-round 69 during that stretch en route to a second-place finish at the Anuenue Spring Break Classic.
• Lucena has finished in the top 15 in three of the team's four events this season, narrowly missing a top-25 finish in the fourth at the Juli Inkster at Meadow Club Invitational.
• Lucena and Madison Wood are tied for the team lead with six rounds at par-or-better.
• Madison Wood has three top 25 finishes on the year — including her first collegiate victory at the Anuenue Spring Break Classic that led to Big West Golfer of the Month honors in March — and narrowly missed a fourth top-25 with a tie for 26th at the Juli Inkster at Meadow Club Invitational.
• Lucena has been the Aggies top scorer in the clubhouse in three of the team's four events this season.
• Lucena's 72.58 scoring average and cumulative 7-over-par leads the team at the end of the regular season, posting the only three rounds in the 60s by an Aggie this year.
• This season marks the 16th for the UC Davis women's golf program
• Head Coach Anna Temple is in her ninth year at the helm of the Aggies
• UC Davis returns six student-athletes off of last season's roster and welcomes one new face in freshman Linette Jun (Cupertino, Calif. / Valley Christian HS '20)
• A three-time WGCA All-American Scholar, senior Madison Wood was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society in 2020.
• Three high school standouts signed National Letters of Intent with the Aggies back in November: Marina Mata de la Barata Barcons of Palo Alto, Calif. (Palo Alto HS), Naomi Danner of Sunnyvale, Calif. (Homestead HS), and Abby Leighton of Santa Rosa, Calif. (Cardinal Newman HS).
