FULLERTON, Calif. -- Sophomore Marlene Gutierrez posted personal records in each of the women's shot put and hammer throw, and captured one of eight Aggie event wins to lead the UC Davis women to the team win at the Cal State Fullerton Tri-Meet at Titan Track Complex Thursday afternoon.
Gutierrez won the shot with a throw of 14.33 meters, or 47 feet, 0.25 inches. That's the best effort in the event since former assistant coach Veronica Smart in 2015, and moves Gutierrez from ninth to fifth in Aggie history. The psychology major from Lindsay, California, also jumped from ninth to seventh among UC Davis' all-time hammer throwers, thanks to her 53.94m (176-11) in her third attempt of the meet.
In all, the UC Davis women scored 66 points, edging UC Santa Barbara's 61, which in turn nipped host Cal State Fullerton's 58-point total. The Aggie men finished third in the meet with 27 points, while the host Titans dominated the standings with 90.
Gutierrez was one of six event winners for the UC Davis women's team. Sarah Anderson (17:06.30) finished more than 27 seconds ahead of teammate Marie Navarro (17:33.87) in the 5,000 meters. Anaya Ward and Emma Arriaga claimed the 1-2 exacta finish in the 800 with times of 2:18.06 and 2:19.94, respectively. Katrina Meier and Bianca Becker each cleared 3.61 meters in the pole vault, with Meier getting first place on attempts.Â
Kerrington Smith followed her Big West Field Athlete of the Week-winning performance with a 11.45m jump on her second attempt, beating out fellow Aggie Samantha Louie (11.29m). The women's 4x100 relay squad of Chelsea Saye, Madison Thomas, Smith and Kathleen Bufka also won by default with a 49.50.
On the men's side, sophomore Matthew Okonwko won the 400 with a 47.56 time, just nine hundredths of a second off of his own PR. He also comes off a Big West Conference weekly honor. Jered Española won the men's pole vault for the second straight week, this time clearing 5.01m (16-5.25).
UC Davis has a bye week from competition before return to action in a dual meet at Fresno Pacific on March 20.
