SACRAMENTO — Sophomore
Jackie Lucena fired a tournament record single-round score of 66 in Monday's second round to end the day in a tie for eighth at 3-under, while senior
Madison Wood also ended the first 36 holes in a tie for 10th at 2-under, helping pace the UC Davis women's golf team to a third-place standing after the first two rounds of the third annual Gunrock Invitational on Monday at the Del Paso Country Club in Sacramento, Calif.
After opening with a first-round 75, Lucena rebounded in a big way, carding seven birdies against only one bogey in the day's second round to break the previous tournament single-round mark of 67 set by Stanford's Calista Reyes last season.
The sophomore, who carded one of only 14 rounds in the 60s on Monday, fell just one stroke shy of matching Andrea Wong's single-round school record of 65 set in the final round of the NCAA Stanford Regional on May 7, 2016, tying her with five other low rounds for second on the school's all-time list.
Lucena stands six shots off the lead, currently shared by the San Jose State's Antonia Malate (68-67—135) and the Cardinal's Rachel Heck (67-68—135) at 9-under.
As a team, Stanford holds the day one lead after 36 holes, firing back-to-back tournament single-round record scores of 278 to stand at 20-under as a team, 13 shots ahead of second-place San Jose State, which finished the day two shots clear of the Aggies at 7-under.
The Cardinal's pair of scores broke the previous mark of 281 set by Sacramento State in the first round of the inaugural event in 2019, while UC Davis' second-round 282 is the fourth-lowest single round in tournament history and tied for the sixth-lowest overall in school history, just five shots off the mark of 277 set at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown in 2011.
Madison Wood opened her day with a 2-under 70, thanks to birdies on three of her final five holes, and closed out the day with an even-par 72, playing the front nine at 2-under. Senior
Hannah Sun also finished among the top 25, finishing with a pair of 73s to finish the first 36 holes at 2-over and a tie for 22nd along with teammate
Andrea Gomez Lloret.
Senior
Skyler Wood rounded out the lineup in a tie for 28th at 3-over, finishing strong with a pair of birdies over her final nine holes to card a second-round 71. Newcomers
Linette Jun, who made her collegiate debut, and
Alexandra Tomita, who redshirted in 2019-20, finished in a tie for 60th and 63rd, respectively, competing as individuals.
The tournament concludes with the final 18 holes on Tuesday, with a shotgun start beginning at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring is available here:
