RENO, Nev. — Even darkness that prematurely ended the second day of competition at the Wolf Pack Classic in Reno on Monday couldn't stop UC Davis senior
Thomas Hutchison, who wrapped up his second round at 1-under on Tuesday before firing a 7-under 65 in the third round to finish tied for second overall and help the Aggies to a sixth-place finish as a team at the Hidden Valley Country Club.
UC Davis, which was in 10th after Monday's first round, posted its second-best team finish of the fall, sharing sixth place with UNLV. The Aggies rebounded from a first-round 306 to shoot 299 in the second round and 277 in Tuesday's final round — the latter the second-lowest team round of the season thus far.
The reigning Big West Conference Golfer of the Month for September, Hutchison posted his third top-three finish in four fall events on Tuesday, carding seven birdies without a bogey on the day to post his second-lowest single round of the year. He finished just one shot off the pace of individual medalist Albert Boneta of New Mexico, who finished at 6-under for the tournament.
With a 71 and a 65 in his final two rounds, Hutchison has now finished at or below par in 10 of his 12 rounds this fall, posting a scoring average of 69.5 in four events.
After opening his tournament with a 77, sophomore
Jacob Westberg finished his second round on Tuesday with a 2-over 74, then added a final-round 70 to finish at 5-over for the tournament and a tie for 25th. Starting on the par-four 11th hole, the Sacramento native's final round included a birdie on 18, then an eagle three on the par-five first hole.
Westberg shared that spot with classmate
Lucas Carper, who finished with a 1-over 73 on Tuesday to also tie for 25th, while sophomore
Mark Stephens jumped 17 spots on the final leaderboard following his 3-under 69 in the final round, carding six birdies on the day and matching his second-lowest single round of the year to finish in a tie for 55th following rounds of 82 and 78.
Sophomore
Alejandro Nava wrapped up his final tournament of the fall with a 79 on Tuesday, finishing in a tie for 77th.
The Aggies now take the rest of the year off from competition, returning to the course on Feb. 3-5 at the Amer Ari Invitational at the Hapuna Golf Course in Waimea, Hawai'i.
