CHULA VISTA, Calif. — The UC Davis men's golf team found the going rough on the opening day of the 2020 Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic, finishing 18th as a team following the first 36 holes at the San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista, Calif.
Junior
Thomas Hutchison, following rounds of 74 and 75, leads the Aggies into the clubhouse after the first two rounds on Monday, finishing at 5-over for the day and 11 shots off the pace of Arizona State's Cameron Sisk, who leads the tournament at 6-under.
San Francisco is the team leader after 36 holes, finishing 1-under as a team and holding a one-shot advantage over the No. 3 Sun Devils and No. 37 Tennessee. It's quite bunched near the top of the scoreboard as only eight strokes separate first through ninth place.
Opening on the par-4 12th hole, Hutchison finished off the back nine at even par before running into trouble on the front, bogeying five of the first six holes before finishing strong with back-to-back birdies on No. 8 and No. 9. The San Jose, Calif., native then finished off his round with a birdie on No. 11 to end at 2-over.
His second round was a little cleaner, but Hutchison could manage only one birdie on the par-5 15th, finishing at 3-over to round out his day.
Hutchison was one of three Aggies to shoot a round of 74 on the day as freshman
Lucas Carper also posted a first-round 74 thanks to four birdies — including three straight on No. 17, No. 18, and No. 1, as did sophomore
Natheethorn Teacharuangchit, who finished 2-over in his opening round, spreading out three birdies to start the day.
Sophomore
Shane Muldowney was UC Davis' next-highest finisher in a tie for 81st after day one, ending his day four shots better in round two from his opening round score, while freshman
Jacob Westberg opened with a 75 en route to a tie for 87th.
The final round begins with a shotgun start on Tuesday morning (March 10) at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring is available here:
