ABOUT THE FIELD: The Cal Opener features regional teams Saint Mary's, San Francisco, Santa Clara, and host Cal. This is the first countable meet of the outdoor season, as the indoor track and field season wraps next weekend in Albuquerque, N.M. for the NCAA Championships. 2019 UC Davis alum Kyle Clancy is also entered in the meet, set to compete in the 110m hurdles, long jump, and discus.
SQUAD GOALS: UC Davis earned a program-first national top-25 event squad ranking for the women's indoor 5000m, and cracked the top-40 in the 3000m to close the season. Eva Goodisson, Chloe Arriaga, and Sarah Anderson all own spots on the all-time 5000m list, while Goodisson and C. Arriaga are also in the 3000m list.
NEW YEAR, NEW NAMES: The Aggies have added 17 women and 14 men to the roster for the 2020 season, featuring athletes in every event group.
VAULTING INTO THE NEW YEAR: Senior Bianca Becker turned heads at the Don Kirby Elite Invite, clearing 3.86m (12-08.00) for second on the all-time indoor lists, and a massive PR. Fellow vaulters Marin Chamberlin and Katrina Meier both cleared 3.71m (12-02.00) for lifetime best marks at the same meet.
HELLO, MY NAME IS: Newly-minted head coach Ngoni Makusha introduces himself as the Aggies' leader heading into the 2020 season after an assistant coaching stint at Drake. The 2008 Olympian and The Bowerman award-winner is joined by new assistant coach Atanas Atanasov, who spent five years at UW as a volunteer assistant overseeing Jeremy Taiwo's legendary multis career. After a year as a volunteer assistant with the UC Davis cross country team, 2013 UC Davis alum Drew Petersen joins the Aggie staff as the director of operations/assistant coach for distances.
