LA QUINTA, Calif. — After opening the day at 4-over in the first four holes, UC Davis junior
Thomas Hutchison regained his day one form and played the final 13 holes at 4-under, finishing at even-par on the day and remaining in contention for individual medalist honors at the 20th annual The Prestige presented by Charles Schwab at the Greg Norman Course at PGA WEST on Tuesday in La Quinta, Calif.
Fans can catch the exciting finish online as Wednesday's final round will be streamed live beginning at 10 a.m. PT at
GolfWeek.com/Prestige2020.
Hutchison stands in seven-way tie for second place at 4-under for the tournament, all chasing San Diego State's Leo Oyo, who enters the final day of competition with a two-shot lead following back-to-back scores of 68. The group in second place includes day one leader Joey Vrzich of Pepperdine, who finished with a 1-over 72 to come back to the pack.
Overall, No. 16 Texas jumped two places and took over the team lead after 36 holes, improving by four shots from Monday's opening round to stand at 14-under for the event. The Longhorns sit five shots ahead of No. 1 Pepperdine in second, and 10 shots clear of third-place No. 22 UCLA and No. 42 San Diego State. UC Davis, which began the day in a tie for fourth as a team, slipped to 15th.
Hutchison's second day on the course didn't quite begin how he planned, with a bogey on the first hole, a double on No. 2, and a bogey on No. 4, before the junior made his charge. The mathematics major formulated a comeback beginning with a birdie on No. 6, then torched the back nine to the tune of 3-under following birdies on No. 11, No. 12, and No. 14, before closing out with four straight pars en route to his 71.
Freshman
Jacob Westberg had the Aggies' second-best score of the day, opening with birdies on three of his first five holes before finishing with a 2-over 73, while classmate
Lucas Carper, who entered the day in a tie for ninth shot a 6-over 77 to slip into a tie for 49th. Sophomore
Natheethorn Teacharuangchit also finished with a 77 on Tuesday, while sophomore
Daniel Kim ended his day with a 78.
Meanwhile, down the street at the Coral Mountain Golf Club, sophomore
Shane Muldowney posted his second-straight sub-par round with a 4-under 68 on Tuesday to move to 6-under and stand in a tie for fifth at The Prestige Individual Tournament heading into Wednesday's final 18 holes. Muldowney, along with the rest of the field, is chasing SMU's Jackson Markham, who retained his day one lead thanks to a second consecutive 64 to move to 16-under for the event.
Opening the day on the third hole, Muldowney finished at 1-under on the front and birdied four of the first seven on the back nine before a bogey on No. 17 — which proved to be his only blemish on an otherwise stellar round. The 68 tied his collegiate low set earlier this year in the first round of the Trinity Forest Invitational hosted by SMU in Dallas, and marked the Carlsbad, Calif., native's third round in the 60s this season.
Freshman
Mark Stephens also made a charge up the leaderboard at the individual tournament on Tuesday, firing a 2-under 70 to move into a tie for 18th at 2-over for the tournament. The round tied his collegiate low, set in the final round of the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills, as the Redding, Calif., native finished with six birdies en route to his day two total.
Wednesday's final round of The Prestige presented by Charles Schwab begins at 7:30 a.m., with the individual competitors teeing off with a shotgun start at 6:45 a.m. In addition to the aforementioned live stream, links to live scoring for both events is available on the men's golf schedule page at UCDavisAggies.com.
