Aggies tied for fourth after day one at The Prestige

Hutchison in a three-way tie for second, Carper in the top 10

LA QUINTA, Calif. — UC Davis junior Thomas Hutchison fired a 4-under 67 to finish in a three-way tie for second, while freshman Lucas Carper is also in the top 10 following a 2-under 69, helping the Aggies into a tie for fourth as a team following the opening round of action at the 20th annual The Prestige presented by Charles Schwab on Monday in La Quinta, Calif.

UC Davis finished the Greg Norman Course at PGA WEST with a 1-over 285 as a team for the day, matching No. 22 UCLA, and standing 10 shots off the lead of top-ranked Pepperdine, which stands at 9-under after 18 holes. No. 9 Texas Tech is second at 6-under, while No. 16 Texas is third at 5-under following the first round to complete the top five.

Hutchison is just one shot off the lead of the Waves' Joey Vrzich — ranked No. 57 in the nation — and tied with Pepperdine's Sahith Theegala, who is ranked No. 5 in the nation, and SMU's Noah Goodwin, ranked No. 4 in the country. Hutchison finished with five birdies on the day, with a bogey on No. 13 his only blemish, en route to matching his lowest round overall — and his lowest opening round score — of the season.

The mathematics major also shot a 67 in the second round of the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills back in October.

Meanwhile, Carper was also in the red following day one, finishing in an eight-way tie for ninth after playing the back nine at 2-under thanks to three birdies in his first five holes this morning. He gave one shot back on No. 3, but posted a birdie two holes later to finish at even-par for the front.

The 69 ties his collegiate low and gives him back-to-back rounds with that score after finishing off the Amer Ari Invitational with the same score. The mechanical engineering major from San Jose, Calif., also shot a 69 earlier this year in the second round of the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational to start the season.

Sophomore Daniel Kim, thanks to a 3-over 74, stands in a tie for 44th after day one, while freshman Jacob Westberg is one shot back of him in a tie for 54th at 4-over for the day. Sophomore Natheethorn Teacharuangchit — appearing in only his second tournament of the season — rounded out the group in a tie for 74th at 9-over.

A little down the road at the Coral Mountain Golf Club, sophomore Shane Muldowney fired an opening day 70 to stand at 2-under and in a tie for fifth at The Prestige Individual Tournament. Muldowney played the back nine at 3-under for the day with birdies on four of his final six holes, before giving a shot back on the front.

The score was his lowest since an opening-round 68 at the Trinity Forest Invitational earlier in the year.

He was one of two Aggies in the individual event as freshman Mark Stephens finished in 28th after the first 18 holes, ending the day with a 4-over 76, which included a run of three-straight birdies on the front nine en route to a 1-under 35 to close out his round.

Play continues on Tuesday (Feb. 18) in the main event with tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m., with a 9 a.m. shotgun start scheduled for the individual tournament at Coral Mountain.

Links to live scoring for both events is available on the men's golf schedule page at UCDavisAggies.com.

In addition, Wednesday's final round of The Prestige presented by Charles Schwab will be streamed live online at Golfweek.com/Prestige2020 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. PT.
