LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Although UC Davis won the doubles point for the third time this season, the Aggies fell to UNLV 4-2 on Friday afternoon in Las Vegas, with freshman Andrei Volgin picking up the lone singles point.
UNLV remains undefeated at 8-0 with the win, while the Aggies drop to 4-3, ending a three-match win streak.
The Aggies won the first doubles match off, as Ivan Thamma and David Goulak raced out to a 4-0 lead at No. 1 doubles. The duo held tight to win 6-3 on the top court, but UNLV responded with a win at No. 3 over Dariush Jalali and Chethan Swanson.
With the doubles point dependent on court two, Daniel Landa and Volgin went back and forth against Eric Samuelsson and Clayton Alenik, forcing a tiebreaker to settle the doubles point. The match remained even throughout the breaker, reaching 5-5, before Landa/Volgin picked up the mini-break to serve out the tiebreaker 7-5. This is just the third time this year that the Aggies have won the doubles point.
UNLV started strong in singles play, winning the first three matches off court at Nos. 1-3 in straight sets, bringing the score to 3-1 in favor of the Rebels.
The Aggies were put in a must-win situation, with the remaining three matches entering a third set. Volgin put up his 19th singles win of the season, and ties Swanson for most dual match wins this year at five after a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win over Anton Ornberg at No. 5 singles. Volgin is now 3-0 at that position.
With the team score at 2-3, the Rebels clinched the 4-2 result at No. 4, with Swanson falling to Tom Ciszewski 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Arjith Jayaraman was midway through the third set when his match was left unfinished.
The Aggies continue their road trip with a neutral-site match against Weber State on Saturday at 10 AM, before returning to the Marya Welch Tennis Center to host Santa Clara and Washington next weekend, Feb. 22-23.
