Distance proves no problem for Aggies on Valentine’s Day

SEATTLE, Wash. — Sydney Holmes wrote her name on another all-time list to close the Don Kirby Elite Invite in New Mexico, while the Aggies' distance group put up some of the fastest times in seven years in the 5000m at the Husky Classic in Washington.

In Albuquerque, Holmes competed in three of the five pentathlon events, recording indoor personal records in two. In her lone track event, Holmes ran to a 0.18 second PR in the 60m hurdles, crossing in 9.41, behind top UC Davis performer Xjaedah Williams, who posted her second consecutive sub-9 time this season.

Holmes' second PR of the day was in the triple jump, where she put up an indoor personal best 11.74m (38-06.25) to jump to fifth all-time in the Aggie records. Samantha Louie was also in the event, and recorded an 11.47m (37-07.75) mark — her best of the indoor season.

In the shot put, Marlene Gutierrez improved upon her best indoor performance with a 13.01m (42-08.25) heave to record her first over-13m throw indoors. Nane Ikahihifo made her indoor debut, finishing with a 12.46m (40-10.50) mark.

The highlight of the Aggies' Valentine's Day proved worth waiting for, as UC Davis went the distance — literally. Sending the distance squad to the Husky Classic, three Aggies were in competition on day one in the 5000m. Eva Goodisson and Chloe Arriaga made their debut at that distance, alongside senior Sarah Anderson in her second indoor season.

Racing in the second heat, C. Arriaga and Anderson paced with the group, with C. Arriaga emerging with a 16:53.64, good for third all-time in the indoor record book. However, C. Arriaga's standing didn't last long, as Goodisson bumped her down in the very next heat.

Making Dempsey Indoor her own track, Goodisson nearly got the indoor school record, set by Aggie legend Sarah Sumpter in 2013 at the same meet, and crossed in 16:39.05, good for second all-time, displacing C. Arriaga to fourth. This is the second time in as many meets at UW that Goodisson has earned a spot on the all-time lists.

Closing the event, Anderson crossed in 7:15.78, her second-fastest indoor time in the 5000m, as her 17:06.39 time from the 2019 MPSF Championships now sits at No. 6 in the record books.

UC Davis continues at the Husky Classic on Saturday, featuring Anaya Ward in the 800m, and Sierra Atkins and C. Arriaga in the 1 Mile.
