WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. — Junior
Thomas Hutchison sits fourth after finishing with a 3-under 141 through the first 36 holes, helping the UC Davis men's golf team sit ninth after day one of the 2020 Southwestern Invitational at the North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif.
The Aggies were one of only six schools to get through two rounds on Monday, which was suspended at 6:05 p.m. due to darkness. UC Davis was nine shots better in its second round of the day, firing a 295 team total to best its opening round score of 304.
The field, which features eight schools among the top 50 in the GolfStat rankings, is currently led by host and No. 6-ranked Pepperdine, which opened with a 3-under 284 through its first 18 holes, but has not yet completed its second round. No. 43 USC sits second at 4-over, currently 7-under as a team with its second round yet to be finished.
Play is scheduled to resume on Tuesday (Jan. 28) at 7:20 a.m., with the teams re-paired and the third round underway at approximately 9:45 a.m.
Hutchison opened his day 3-under through four holes in round one thanks to an eagle on 12 and a birdie on 13, but finished just 1-under on the back nine after a bogey and double bogey on back-to-back holes before a birdie on 18. He recovered after giving two strokes back on the front, posting an eagle on the par-5 fourth and a birdie on six to climb back into contention with a 71.
The San Jose, Calif., native then finished even on back to start round two before a run of four consecutive birdies on the fourth through seventh holes highlighted his front, finishing with a 2-under 70, currently three shots off the lead held by the Trojans' Leon D'Souza, who shot a 6-under 138.

Lucas Carper finished day one currently tied for 20th, rebounding from an opening round 76 to shoot a 1-under 71 in Monday's second round. The San Jose, Calif., native also posted an eagle on the par-5 fourth in his opening round, and posted birdies on 10 and 18 before playing even on the front nine in his second round.
Newcomer
Jacob Westberg currently is in a tie for 44th at 8-over for the day, improving on a first-round 77 with a second-round 75, carrying momentum into Tuesday's final round following birdies on three of his final six holes. Freshman
Michael Shaw, making his collegiate debut, currently sits in a tie for 68th at 20-over, including a second-round 79, while freshman
Mark Stephens is in a tie for 70th.
