Aggies make their charge up the leaderboard

Hutchison and Carper post sub-par rounds to pace UC Davis

USAFA, Colo. — Junior Thomas Hutchison shot a 4-under-par 68 to jump 20 spots into a three-way tie for 11th after 36 holes, while freshman Lucas Carper had his finest day in his very young collegiate career with a 3-under-par 69 on Saturday, helping the UC Davis men's golf team into fifth after two rounds at the 51st annual Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational at the Eisenhower Golf Course.

The Aggies, as a team, carded the third-lowest team round of the day at 283 to stand at 1-under heading into Sunday's final round. The host Falcons continue to lead after 36 holes with a two-day total of 564, leading in-state rival Colorado by two strokes, and third-place Northern Colorado by five.

Wyoming sits five shots ahead of UC Davis in fourth, with Texas State, which stood in a tie for 12th at the end of day one, standing three shots behind the Aggies along with Utah State and Boise State at 2-over for the tournament.

Individually, Southern Utah's Jake Vincent shot a second-round 66 to stand atop the leader board with a 10-under-par 134, standing three shots ahead of Northern Colorado's Coby Welch and Air Force's Joshua Wu.

Starting on the front nine on Saturday, Hutchison carded birdies on No. 6 and No. 7 to finish 2-under after nine, then posted three scores in the red on the back nine to help negate a bogey on No. 14 en route to his lowest round of the year. His 68 was tied for the third lowest round of the day.

Carper, who shot a 2-over-par 74 in his first-ever collegiate round, carded six birdies on the day en route to the first sub-par round of his career, finishing 2-under on the front, but finished birdie-bogey-birdie-bogey on the back nine to close with a 1-under 35 on the back.

Sophomore Daniel Kim and freshman Mark Stephens ended the day in a tie for 34th as Kim shot a 1-over-par 73, while Stephens finished with a 2-over-par 74 after finishing even in his collegiate debut on Friday. Sophomore Shane Muldowney was also steady, finishing with a 1-over 73 on Saturday to end the day tied for 44th heading into the final round.

Muldowney is the first Aggie to tee off in the final round on Sunday morning at 7:15 a.m. PT, followed by Stephens (7:24 a.m.), Kim (7:33 a.m.), Carper (7:42 a.m.), and Hutchison (7:51 a.m.). UC Davis will be joined by players from Texas State, Utah State, and Boise State.
