DAVIS, Calif. — UC Davis men's tennis put up another dominant day on Saturday at the Aggie Invitational, setting up a couple all-UC Davis matches for Sunday.
In men's A doubles, the top-seeded David Goulak and Ivan Thamma cruised through their first round match, and made a comeback from 1-6 down in their semifinal round, but ultimately fell short to Portland's Tom Hann and Kostiantyn Nesterenko in a tiebreaker, 8-7(3). Brett Brinkman and Daniel Landa also fell in a tiebreaker.
In the men's B doubles draw, UC Davis will be on full display, as the duo of Arjith Jayaraman and Andrei Volgin advanced to the finals with a pair of straightforward wins over Pacific and Sacramento State teams, and will meet teammates Chethan Swanson and Dariush Jalali Sunday morning. Swanson and Jalali posted two 8-6 wins, taking out Sacramento State and a team from Portland.
In singles, fourth-seeded Ivan Thamma recorded a three-set win over Portland's Nesterenko, who he had lost to in straight sets in the same tournament his freshman year. Thamma advances to play second-seeded Semen Pankin from Portland. Goulak won the first set over Santa Clara's Jesus Tapiador Barajas, but was forced to retire in the match due to injury.
In the B draw, freshmen Brinkman and Volgin both advanced with wins, and will face off in the bracket's semifinal on Sunday at 10 AM. Brinkman defeated Nevada's Delmas N'Tcha in three, while Volgin dismantled Ryan Ali (SCU), dropping just one game a set.
Playing extra singles matches, Swanson and Landa recorded wins, with Landa going the distance over Saint Mary's Matis Bot, winning 10-8 in the third set super-tiebreaker. Jayaraman fell in a three-setter of his own to Santa Clara's Vasileios Iliopoulos, who had played primarily at No.4 for the Broncos last season, and went 19-9 on the year.
The final day of the Aggie Invite picks up on Sunday, with the doubles final at 8:30 AM, and the singles semifinals at 10 AM, with the final round to follow. There will also be extra matches available through player sign ups.
