Hutchison in the top 10 as Aggies finish sixth

Junior cards his best finish of the year in Dallas

DALLAS — Junior Thomas Hutchison ended 1-over for the day and 4-under for the tournament to post his first top-10 finish of the season on Tuesday afternoon, helping the UC Davis men's golf team to a sixth-place showing at the 2019 Trinity Forest Invitational hosted by SMU in Dallas.

The Aggies, who entered the day in fourth place as a team, finished at 6-over on Tuesday and ended the tournament with an even-par 852. Arizona State won the event with a record-setting 30-under 822 to shade the host and runner-up Mustangs by four shots.

The Sun Devils' Alex del Rey helped his team to the crown with a record-setting performance of his own, finishing the 54 holes with a 16-under-par 197 with rounds of 67-64-66, breaking the mark held by North Texas' Thomas Rosenmueller set last season (-13).

Hutchison opened his final round strong, carding birdies on No. 7 and No. 9 to end the front nine at 2-under, but gave it all back on the back with a bogey at the turn and a double on No. 12 before finishing at par the rest of the way.

Finishing at even par through the first 36 holes, freshman Lucas Carper made his way up the leaderboard on Tuesday, firing a 1-under 70 to finish in a tie for 23rd. The newcomer sank five birdies on the day to move up four spots on the tournament's final day, posting his second top-25 finish of the year after finishing tied for 12th in his collegiate debut at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational.

With their performances this weekend, Hutchison and Carper have now each posted five rounds at par or better to lead the squad.

Sophomore Shane Muldowney, who stood in a tie for 16th at the end of day two, tumbled into a tie for 49th on Tuesday, finishing with a 4-over 217, while freshman Jacob Westberg was just one shot back of his teammate in a tie for 54th with a 5-over 218. Sophomore Daniel Kim rounded out the scoring group in a tie for 65th with a 7-over 220 for the tournament.

UC Davis is now off until Oct. 6-8, when they head to Wisconsin, to participate in the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills for the team's final event of the fall. This will be the third consecutive season that the Aggies will compete at the event, posting their best finish last year with a tie for fifth.
