DALLAS — Sophomore
Shane Muldowney fired a 3-under 68 to finish in a tie for second after the first round and led a group of three Aggies in the top 20, as UC Davis is only two shots off the pace and stands third following day one at the Trinity Forest Invitational hosted by SMU on Sunday at the Trinity Forest Golf Club.
The Aggies finished with a day one total of 281 to stand behind only the host Mustangs and Arizona State, who are tied atop the team leaderboard with a 5-under 279. UC Davis leads Arkansas-Little Rock by one shot and Houston by three after the first 18 holes.
After playing the back nine even, Muldowney caught fire on the front, posting birdies on No. 1, No. 5, No. 7, and No. 8 to finish the day with his lowest round of the season, besting the 69 he shot in the third round of the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational back on Sept. 8.
After opening 3-over on the back nine to start his round, junior
Thomas Hutchison owned the front nine, posting birdies on six of the nine holes to finish five under there, and 2-under for the day with a 69 — his fourth sub-par round of the year.
Carper rounded out the Aggies' group in the top 20, finishing the back nine at one under thanks to a birdie on the par-4 16th, and almost had a bogey free front, but slipped on the par-5 seventh hole to finish at even for the day.
Making his second consecutive start, freshman
Jacob Westberg shot a 2-over 73 to finish in a tie for 37th, finishing the front nine at 1-under for the day, while sophomore
Daniel Kim ended the day in a tie for 66th, shooting a 4-over 75 — including an eagle two on the par-4 15th.
The second round begins at 6 a.m. PT on Monday (Sept. 23), with the Aggie contingent teeing off beginning at 7:30 a.m. PT. Links to live scoring are available on the men's golf schedule page at UCDavisAggies.com.
