DAVIS, Calif. — Senior
Max Somple finished with four goals — three of those in the second half to help the Aggies pull away — while sophomore
Nir Gross and junior
Jack Stafford added two apiece, lifting No. 7 UC Davis to a 13-6 victory over No. 19 California Baptist in the Western Water Polo Association opener for both squads on Friday afternoon at the Aggie Roundup.
UC Davis improved to 4-2 overall on the year, getting goals from eight different players as well as solid goalkeeping from junior
Jonah Addington, who stopped 16 shots on the day. Senior
Yurii Hanley added four assists to his third-period goal, finishing the day with five points and bringing his season assist total to 18 through the first six matches of the year.
The Lancers fell to 1-6 with the defeat, led by two goals apiece from PJ McDonough and Joseph Galgani.
The Aggies burst out of the gates with the first four goals of the contest off the hands of Stafford, Somple,
Eric Martel, and Gross, before Logan Mena broke up the run with less than a minute to play in the first.
A back-and-forth second quarter saw California Baptist inch closer, getting goals from Kyle Johnson and McDonough to make it 5-3 at the break. The Lancers made it a one-goal game on Galgani's second of the day just over a minute into the third, but the Aggies would strike down any further comeback attempt, scoring five unanswered tallies into the fourth quarter to lead, 10-4, and they never looked back.
Sophomore
Ian Ambidge (his fourth), sophomore
Spencer Towill (his second), and sophomore
Matthew Whipple (his first of the year), then closed out the contest with three straight scores to cap the scoring. Gross' two scores give him a team-high 14 goals for the year, while Somple moved into second place on the squad with 12.
UC Davis returns to the pool on Saturday (Sept. 21) at 2:15 p.m., as the Aggies host top-ranked Stanford on day two of the Aggie Roundup. A complete tournament schedule is available at https://ucdavisaggies.com/sports/2019/7/19/2019-AggieRoundup-Central.aspx.
