PROVIDENCE, R.I. — UC Davis men's water polo saw six players go for a hat trick in the highest scoring game in program history against Iona on Saturday, Aug. 29. The Aggies came back in the afternoon and took care of business against No. 20 Brown later in the afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)

• The Aggies began the match fast with eight goals in the first eight minutes, highlighted by a first period hat trick from Thomas Kiesling.
• Iona would add a score late in the quarter, giving Davis an 8-1 lead after one.
• The domination continued into the second quarter, with Austin Quick and Thomas Marr adding onto the frenzy.
• Three goals from the Gaels would give them some breathing room before Lucas Wulfhorst would make himself known with his first collegiate goal, highlighting a 14-5 lead for his team at the half.
• Coming back into the pool, other hat tricks were secured for Aggies in the third quarter, including one from Quick for the second straight contest and one for Wulfhorst.
• Kiesling would also add two more scores to his tally to give him a team-leading five, giving his team a 22-7 advantage heading into the final period.
• With five minutes left in the fourth, Cassius Wolf set the new team record with the 26 goal on the day, beating the previous mark set against LMU back in 1993.
• This period also saw Andonis Petroutsas, Mateo Ruano, and Oleg Shatskikh secure three goals each.
• The finishing touches were done by Lucas Ruano, who's second score gave UC Davis a 31-11 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)

• Period one against the Bears was much quieter for the Aggies, getting only two goals courtesy of Oriol Viñas and Shatskikh.
• With William McKeon in net, Davis was able to keep Brown out of the net in the first period, holding a 2-0 lead.
• In the second, the offense began to come to life once again with goals by Quick, Timothy Kerr, and Wulfhorst building a sizeable lead.
• The Bears would find the back of the net early in the quarter, but the score read 7-1 in favor of the Aggies at the half.
• Period number three was much more competitive on both sides, with Brown finding three goals to match Davis' five.
• Back-to-back goals from Kiesling along with a hat trick from Wulfhorst highlighted the road team's period, giving them a 12-4 advantage.
• As Baxter Chelsom settled in as the second half goalkeeper for the Aggies, the team was able to keep the home team off the board in the fourth quarter.
• The first goals of the season for Oliver Wilmink and first of the game for Gabe Bensen highlighted this period, allowing Davis to put away their opponent 17-4 and begin the season 3-0 for the first time since 2023.

UP NEXT: UC Davis will face its biggest challenge yet in the final day of the Bruno Classic when the team faces No. 5 Fordham on Sunday, Aug. 30. The match will be on ESPN+ and will be at 8:40 am PT.
