LONG BEACH, Calif. — Concluding a long week in Southern California, freshman standout Kirsten Carter was again one of the highlights — this time at the 25th Beach Invitational. In windy conditions that left most times with a wind-aided distinction, Carter was one of two Aggies to better their all-time standings in the UC Davis record book, joined by senior thrower Erika Contreras.
Running in the women's 400m, Carter finished in 54.65 for a new personal best, and now sits fourth all-time behind teammate Mikaela Adolphus (3rd, 54.28). Carter finished fourth overall, and third among collegiate athletes, while Adolphus was also in competition, finishing 38th overall in 57.52.
Also improving her all-time mark was Contreras in the women's discus. Contreras hit a PR by a little over two meters (around seven feet) to finish 30th overall — behind half a dozen athletes who hold NCAA top-20 marks this season — at 48.12m (157-10). Now sitting in seventh all-time in the discus, Contreras moves up to fourth in the Big West.
As luck would have it, all of the Aggie women sprinters raced in the middle heats of the women's 100m, and avoided the wind, as all five finished in the low 12-second range, with none being wind-aided marks. The women's 200m later in the day would not be so lucky, as the winds picked up to register as strong as 3.0 meters/second at times. Although Carter nearly replicated her performance in the 200m from Azusa on Friday, she ran with a +2.5 m/s tailwind, just missing her personal best mark of 23.73.
Mandy Wainfan represented UC Davis in the mid-distances, and nearly PR-ed in the women's 800m, crossing in 2:16.66, just short of her 2:16.53 PR. In the 100m hurdles, Xjaedah Williams finished with another all-time-worthy mark, finishing in 14.30, although she already owns a spot in the record books. Flora Oliveira raced in the 400m hurdles, notching a top-ten finish with a time of 1:01.86.
On the men's side, only a handful of Aggies hit the track, with Brandon Jetter leading the way in the 100m and 200m. For the third time this season, Jetter has crossed at 10.68 in the 100m dash, a mere 0.04 off his PR in the event, although he's raced with different winds each time. In the 400m, freshman Max Glasser hit a PR, finishing 9th overall at 48.24, and seventh among college runners. In the 110m hurdles, multi Kyle Clancy returned to the track, earning a top-ten finish with a 14.40 time, while Jonathan Perry hit a season-best of 14.86.
The Aggies will get a few days rest, before hosting their third and final meet of the season on Friday, April 26. Friday's meet will be the 14th Annual Causeway Classic, and will be a dual meet against Sacramento State for Causeway Cup points. The meet will also serve as a senior day for the Aggies, who will graduate half of the men's roster, and nearly a third of the women's. The meet is set to begin with the hammer and men's javelin at 2 PM, with the running events beginning with the 4x100m relays at 3:45 PM.
