Seniors lead the way in WWPA win

The UC Davis senior class of Eric Martel, Yurii Hanley, Max Somple, and Holden Tamblyn, combine for seven points on the day

DAVIS, Calif. — The UC Davis senior class of Eric Martel, Yurii Hanley, Max Somple, and Holden Tamblyn combined for seven points on the day, while sophomore Nir Gross netted a match-high three goals, helping the No. 11 Aggies send their seniors out with a victory, sinking Santa Clara, 12-5, on Saturday afternoon at Schaal Aquatic Center.

UC Davis remained unbeaten in Western Water Polo Association play, improving to 11-7 overall and 5-0 in conference, setting up a key pair of contests in Southern California next weekend against LMU (Nov. 7) and UC San Diego (Nov. 9).

Led by a pair of goals from Mac Carey, the Broncos fell to 11-11 overall and 0-5 in WWPA play, despite holding a slim 27-26 advantage in the shot column.

Gross and Martel the closed out the period with goals, giving UC Davis a commanding 9-1 advantage at the break.

Undaunted, the Broncos tried to claw their way back into the contest, opening the second half with three straight goals by Carey, Patrick Kirk, and Adam Low, to make it 9-4, but the Aggies were steady, scoring three of the final four goals off the hands of Gross, Somple, and Michael Plastino en route to the win.

Martel, Tamblyn, and Plastino, each finished with two goals, while Jack Stafford added two assist to his second quarter score. Keenan Anderson opened the second quarter with a goal and added an assist on the day, while Hanley added a pair of assists to his team-high total.
