Goulak/Thamma reach final, Volgin upsets top seed at Pacific

STOCKTON, Calif. David Goulak and Ivan Thamma emerged victorious out of their all-Aggie doubles quarterfinal, winning their next match to advance to the Kramer Classic final. At the Pacific Invite, Arjith Jayaraman and Andrei Volgin remain in contention in both singles and doubles main draws, with Volgin upsetting the tournament's top singles seed.

Thamma and Goulak faced teammates Dariush Jalali and Chethan Swanson in the quarterfinals of the main draw doubles in Rolling Hills Estates, winning the matchup 8-4. Advancing to the final round of the Kramer Classic, Goulak and Thamma defeated Arizona's Jared Horweed and Nick Lagaev by an identical 8-4 score in the semifinal.

Goulak and Thamma are set to face Jake Trondson and Raul Dobai of New Mexico at 11 AM on Sunday at the Jack Kramer Club.

At the Pacific Invite, the Aggies were again successful in both singles and doubles, with Jayaraman and Volgin going undefeated in both events with rematches from the Aggie Invite in Davis.

Jayaraman and Volgin upheld their seed, defeating the third-seeded Tadiwa Chinamo and Akram El Sallaly of Pacific 7-1 in the tiebreaker. Competing for the doubles crown, the Aggie duo will take on fourth seed Nitzan Ricklis and Paul Giraurd (San Francisco) at 8:30 AM on Sunday.

UC Davis continued to roll in singles play, with three Aggies posting straight-set wins to reach the quarterfinals. Volgin and Jayaraman played familiar opponents from the Aggie Invite, with Volgin remaining victorious over Sacramento State's Anton De La Puente, while Jayaraman had his revenge on Santa Clara's Arthur Neuhaus, defeating the Bronco 6-4, 7-5. Brett Brinkman put up a sound win over Sacramento State's Carlos Rodriguez, dropping just four games.

In the second singles of the day, Volgin highlighted action with a two-set upset of the draw's top seed, Julien Evrard of Nevada. Evrard was 8-4 in singles entering this weekend, and played every match at the No. 1 position in the singles lineup in 2018-19. Out of the four remaining players, Volgin is the only unseeded competitor and will go up against (3) Santiago Hinojosa in the semifinals.

Facing yet another familiar foe, Jayaraman took down Hermont Legaspi of Sacramento State 6-3, 6-3, and will play second-seeded Ricklis (USF) in Sunday's semifinal. Ricklis advanced with a three set battle over UC Davis' Brinkman, with the score falling 6-7(9), 6-3, 6-4 in favor of the Dons.

Tennis continues with the Kramer Classic doubles final at 9:30 AM on Sunday morning, while the other half of the team competes in the Pacific Invitational doubles final at 8:30 AM. Singles kicks off in the semifinals at 9:30, with the winners advancing for a potential all-Aggie matchup at 12:30 PM.
