STOCKTON, Calif. — Opening the Pacific Invitational in a dominant fashion, the Aggies are slated for an appearance in the semifinals of doubles, as well as all four in action in the round of 16 in singles. At the Kramer Classic, UC Davis men's tennis will automatically advance a doubles pair to the tournament's semifinal, as an all-Aggie matchup is scheduled for Saturday morning.
Featuring two doubles teams from the Aggie Invite earlier this fall, the Aggies opened play in Stockton with Daniel Landa and Brett Brinkman in the round of 16. The duo finished the day 1-1, dropping their opening round match to Javier Luque/Guillermo Romero (Holy Names), but rebounded with a consolation victory over Sacramento State's Carlos Rodriguez and Anton De La Puente, winning 8-3.
Arjith Jayaraman and Andrei Volgin, the draw's second seed, earned a bye in the first round, but advances to Saturday's semifinal after a sound win over the Hornets' Hermont Legaspi and Michael Vizcarra. Jayaraman and Volgin face Pacific's Tadiwa Chinamo and Akram El Sallaly, the third seed, at 8:30 AM.
In singles play, both Aggies in action won their matches to move on to the round of 16. Brinkman defeated Romero (HNU) in straight sets, while Landa posted a three-set win over Nevada's Daniel Dudockin, winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Brinkman faces Rodriguez (SAC), while Landa takes on San Francisco's Paul Giraud.
Also earning a bye out of the first round of singles, Volgin and Jayaraman open their singles bids in the round of 16. Volgin matches up against De La Puente (SAC), who he played earlier this year at the Aggie Invite, while fourth-seeded Jayaraman will have a rematch against Santa Clara's Arhur Neuhaus. The two have also played once before this fall.
All four singles matches will start at 10 AM, with the winners advancing to the quarterfinals at 1 PM.
After a results error out of Rolling Hills Estates, Chethan Swanson was the only Aggie to advance in the singles draw, falling to BYU's Mateo Vereau Melendez, who reached the finals of the 2019 ITA Mountain Regional last week.
In doubles play, both teams were victorious in their first matches with identical 8-6 scores, setting up an all-Aggie quarterfinal. Dariush Jalali and Swanson defeated Arizona's Stewart Block and Igor Karpovets, while top-seeded David Goulak and Ivan Thamma beat Jack Barnett and Matheus Leite (BYU). Saturday's quarterfinal will begin at 9:30 AM, with the winner advancing to the semifinal at 1:30 PM.
Jalali, Thamma, and Goulak were in action in extra singles matches, but results were not available at the time of this release.
