Westberg, Hutchison pace Aggies at Marquette

Duo finishes with opening-round 74's on day one in Wisconsin

ERIN, Wisc. — Freshman Jacob Westberg and junior Thomas Hutchison each fired opening-round 74's to finish at 2-over for the day, and help pace the UC Davis men's golf team to a tie for sixth place following day one of the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills on Sunday in Wisconsin.

The Aggies shot a 12-over 300 as a team to match Indiana and Wisconsin for the No. 6 slot, all chasing first-place UCLA, which finished with a 4-over 292 to pace the field. Liberty's Alexandre Fuchs was one of only four players under par on Sunday and stands atop the leaderboard following a 4-under 68, leading Georgia State's Ashton Poole by one shot.

Opening the day paired alongside the Bruins and host Golden Eagles, Westberg posted birdies on the par-4 fourth and the par-5 14th en route to his 74, while Hutchinson was even for the day save for bogeys on No. 6 and No. 17 to round out his first day.

Another pair of freshmen in newcomers Lucas Carper and Mark Stephens also battled the course to finish in a tie for 33rd after 18 holes. Carper carded birdies on the second and 14th holes, finishing 2-over on both the front and back nine, while Stephens was 1-under after the front nine before struggling on the back.

In his first competition of the season, sophomore Natheethorn Teacharuangchit ended the day in a tie for 57th with a pair of birdies competing as an individual, while sophomore Shane Muldowney ended in a tie for 66th.

Play continues with the second round on Monday (Oct. 7) at 7 a.m. PT. Live scoring is available via Golfstat at http://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=team&tid=19849.
