ROLLING HILLS ESTATES — Wrapping up opening day at the Jack Kramer Club, junior Chethan Swanson posted an upset victory in the round of 32 of singles play. Competing split-squad, four Aggies head to Stockton for the Pacific Invitational, kicking off November with two rounds of doubles Friday morning, followed by one round of singles.
At the Kramer Classic, senior David Goulak was the first to take the court, and defeated Arizona's Conner Olsen in straight sets to reach the round of 32, delivering Olsen just his second loss of the fall. With a quick turnaround, Goulak faced BYU's Jack Barnett, but fell 7-5, 6-1.
Swanson needed to go the distance for his win, out-lasting fourth-seeded Igor Karpovets (Arizona) in their opening round, winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Karpovets competed in all three spots in the top-half of the lineup for the Wildcats last season, and posted a 6-6 record at No. 3 singles. Swanson will face Vereau Melendez in the next round.
The Kramer Classic continues Friday with the doubles round of 16 at 8:30 AM, as top-seeded Goulak/Thamma and Swanson/Dariush Jalali are looking to advance to the quarterfinal for an All-Aggie matchup. Singles begins at 11 AM, with the winners advancing to the quarterfinals at 2:30 PM.
At the Pacific Invitational, all four Aggies will be in competition in the tournament's top draw in both singles and doubles. Starting the tournament in the doubles A Flight round of 16, Brett Brinkman and Daniel Landa will pair once again to take on Javier Luque and Guillermo Romero (Holy Names) at 8:30 AM. The winner will advance to play a second match at 9:30 AM. Earning the tournament's second seed after claiming the B Flight doubles crown at the Aggie Invite earlier this fall, Andrei Volgin and Arjith Jayaraman earned a bye in the first round, and will play the winner of Boris Reckow/James Watt (Saint Mary's) or Hermont Legaspi/Michael Vizcarra (Sacramento State) in the quarterfinals.
Continuing with one round of singles, Landa and Brinkman are both in the A Flight round of 32, and will play Daniel Dudockin (Nevada) and Romero (Holy Names), respectively, at 11 AM. Volgin and fourth-seeded Jayaraman both received first-round byes and will start their singles bids on Saturday morning. Draws for the Pacific Invitational can be found here.
