DAVIS, Calif. — In the final day of the 2018 Aggie Invitational, UC Davis men's tennis saw success in both singles and doubles extra matches, highlighted by another day of undefeated doubles play.
Doubles concluded with the Aggies on the winning end of things, with Arjith Jayaraman and Dariush Jalali defeating Levent Sever and Nathan Hampton 8-5, and David Goulak and Chethan Swanson getting the win over Nevada's Benjamin Campi and Daniel Dudockin 8-4.
The 2018-19 team is a young one, with no seniors on the roster. "We have a young team with two freshmen and four sophomores playing this weekend. They are competing and learning what it takes to win at this next level. I'm happy we can get the experience each day and grow from it," says head coach Eric Steidlmayer.
In the extra singles matches, three Aggies recorded wins, including freshman Daniel Landa, who earned a 7-6, 6-1 win over David Abfalter (SMC). Dariush Jalali and Arjith Jayaraman added to their doubles win from the morning with straight set singles wins.
"Going forward, we will want to make less unforced errors, know our winning patterns and plays better, and start all the matches with an appropriate confidence or belief level. All will be very important as the season and fall progresses."
While most of the team will be enjoying a few days off of competition, sophomore Ivan Thamma will start his ITA All-American bid in the qualifying round on Monday, Oct. 1 in Tulsa, Okla. Thamma plays Indiana junior Bennett Crane at 8 AM CT at the Union Courts. Crane made the qualifying draw by winning three round in the pre-qualifying tournament.
