DAVIS, Calif. -- After garnering seven top five finishes, three of which were second place titles, at Arizona State's Sun Angel Classic last weekend, the UC Davis track and field squad stays put at home to host the annual Woody Wilson Classic meet at the Woody Wilson Track and Toomey Field, the second and final home meet of the season, on Friday and Saturday (Apr. 13-14).
Aside from host UC Davis, a total of 17 teams, including Division I universities Fresno State, Pacific, Saint Mary's, and Santa Clara, as well as a handful of Division II and community college teams, are scheduled to make an appearance at this event.
Friday's portion of the two-day meet features only the men's and women's hammer throw, which will take place at the hammer ring near the Schaal Aquatics Center at 2 p.m. Saturday's portion of the classic beings their field slate with the men's javelin throw at 9 a.m., while the women's 3000 steeplechase will kick things off for the running events at noon.
In Big West Conference rankings, as released by the TFRRS, the UC Davis men's squad is ranked in fifth, while the women's squad is ranked in sixth. For individual performances in Big West Conference play, junior jumper Steven Childs and freshman hurdler Anthony Easter still hold the top spots in the men's long jump and men's 400 hurdles, respectively, while the new additions of senior pole vaulter Marc Toney and sophomore distance runner Sarah Anderson are now at the top of the performance list in the men's pole vault and the women's 10000 meter run, respectively.
Among other top Aggie performers in the Big West Conference, distance runners Jordy Ceja and Jon Horvath occupy the second and third spots on the performance list in the men's 5000 run, while Drew Xandrine-Anderson and T.K. Dodds claim the second and third spots on the list in the men's triple jump. Jumpers Kyle Clancy and Erinn Beattie both have the second best performances in the high jump, while the men's and women's 4x100 relay teams currently have the third best times.
To highlight the top performances at the Sun Angel Classic, Toney, Childs, and junior sprinter Kieana Butler each scored second-place titles at the Arizona meet. Toney's second-place finish was earned by his 5.00m/16-4.75 pole vault, while Childs and Butler garnered their second-place titles with a 7.43m/24-4/50 long jump and a 24.32 second 200 dash time, respectively.
Childs's long jump measurement tied the sixth-place holder in the UC Davis record book, while Butler's 200 dash tied the ninth-place holder in Aggie history.
The remaining Aggie student-athletes to leave the Sun Angel Classic with a top-five finish were Nigel Burnett, who led the Aggie team of four in the men's 100 with a 10.66 dash, and also helped the men's 4x100 relay team finish in fourth. On the women's side, Butler also collected a fourth-place finish in the women's 100 with a time of 11.83, just two seconds below her personal best time, while Beattie scored a spot in fifth in the high jump with a 1.75m/5-8.75 height.
