No. 7 UC Davis sweeps two WWPA foes in Saturday action

Aggies face UC San Diego in Sunday's ninth-place game

STANFORD, Calif. -- Senior utility Ido Goldschmidt scored hat tricks in each end of Saturday's doubleheader, helping No. 7 UC Davis to wins against Western Water Polo Association leaguemates Air Force and Loyola Marymount at the Mountain Pacific Invitational men's water polo tournament. The Aggies edged the Falcons by a 13-12 final, then prevailed, 16-7, against the Lions in the nightcap.

Junior attacker Yurii Hanley had two goals in each game, while sophomore Jack Stafford totaled four goals on the day.

Senior attacker Marcus Anderson scored the game-winner with 1:08 remaining while Stafford and Goldschmidt each recorded hat tricks, helping UC Davis cling to a 13-12 victory in Saturday's second-round contest against unranked Air Force.

Hanley added two goals, with Nir Gross, Nick Coufal, Holden Tamblyn, Riley Venne and Anderson each chipping in one for the Aggies. Five different Falcon players scored two goals apiece.

UC Davis never trailed in the contest, but AFA managed to tie the game on five occasions. Air Force juniors Michael Miller and Reagan Pittman hit back-to-back to equalize at 12-12 with just 2:25 remaining in regulation. The Aggies defended a power play with 1:50 left, then Anderson scored the go-ahead on the opposite end. Each team had 6-on-5 chances in the final minute, but neither took advantage.

The Aggies held a 3-1 lead after the first quarter, a 6-5 edge at halftime, and a 10-9 lead through three quarters. Their largest margin was 5-2, set after Tamblyn's goal at the midway point of the second frame.

UC DAVIS 16, LOYOLA MARYMOUNT 7
Goldschmidt scored his second hat trick of the day, while Hanley, Tamblyn, Colter Knight, George Kuesis and Kyle Reilly each added two as UC Davis led wire-to-wire in the consolation semifinal win against LMU.

The Aggies led 4-0 after the first quarter and 8-3 at the halftime break. Alexandros Athymaritis converted a power play with less than a minute to go to bring LMU to within 10-6, then UC Davis began a 6-1 run on Goldschmidt's hat-trick goal on the next possession.

UC Davis concludes the Mountain Pacific Invite against No. 11 UC San Diego in Sunday's ninth-place game at 2:40 p.m., held in the Belardi Pool of the Avery Aquatic Center.
