Sept. 3, 2017 LA JOLLA, Calif. - Junior Marcus Anderson scored four goals with three assists to lead No. 9 UC Davis to an 11-5 win over 12th-ranked tourney host UC San Diego, wrapping up a Sunday sweep at the Triton Invitational men's water polo at Triton Pool. The Aggies also opened the session by holding on to a 10-8 victory against No. 13 UC Irvine.
UC Davis improves to 3-1 for the year. The four goals matched the career high for Anderson, a fourth-year managerial economics major from San Anselmo. Junior
Ido Goldschmidt added two goals in the contest, while true freshman
Jonah Addington posted 10 saves against the five goals allowed. Oddly, the Aggies needed only 19 shots to amass their 11 goals while the Tritons shot just 5-for-32 in the contest. UC Davis opened the game with four straight goals, including three on 6-on-5 opportunities. Anderson drew first blood on a power play at 6:25 and assisted Goldschmidt and senior
Cory Laidig during that run. He then scored back-to-back late in the fourth to help the Aggies craft an 8-2 halftime advantage. UCSD put up three goals in the third, with a five-meter penalty goal from last year's Western Water Polo Association Freshman of the Year, Skyler Munatones, making it 9-5. However, Addington recorded five stops in the fourth quarter to keep the Aggies out of reach. UC Davis opened Sunday's action with a 10-8 win over UC Irvine, seizing an early 3-1 lead, extending that advantage to as much as 9-3 late in the third quarter, then holding off a late Anteater surge in the fourth. Sophomore
Holden Tamblyn and redshirt freshman
Kyle Reilly each netted a pair of goals in the win. Tamblyn's two goals bookended a 5-0 run that transformed a 4-3 battle at 5:48 in the second quarter to a 9-3 edge with 2:44 to go in the third. The Aggies led 6-3 at the halftime break, then Goldschmidt and senior center
Morgan Olson-Fabbro found the net with natural goals to start the second half. UCI responded with five straight goals during a span of nearly eight minutes, including back-to-back from former Air Force standout Robby Stiefel. Ian Fleenor's score at 2:41 brought the margin to a single goal at 9-8. However, Aggie sophomore
Yurii Hanley tacked on a 10th goal and UC Davis successfully defending a power play down the final stretch to preserve the win. UC Davis will return to Triton Pool on November 4 for its WWPA conference game against UCSD, then again two weeks later for the conference tournament.
